Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
I have been CPR/first aid certified for many years, and I have only had to have my training used twice. Both times on a young child, and both times in a school setting with several other adults who were also trained. I think that the initial panic of having to actually use the training, stops some people in their tracks. First, I had a child choking on food. Panic, pray to God I remember what to do and then adrenaline took over. Second time, child passes out from a crying temper fit, this happened the day after the school had re-certification, which I didn't attend. Child drops, everyone just stands there, once again, pray I remember what to do, but just moving the child started those lungs working again. Happy ending both times.
I guess my point is you can be trained and certified, and never have to use it. And in a job that may not have lifesaving in its job description, there has to be a panic factor when suddenly you have to jump into action to save someone.

Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
According to the article, the biggest error was the 911 operator not asking about the breathing. They're the ones who expect to deal with life and death situations and are prepared for them; it would never occur to me to expect that every CM knows CPR and is ready to do it at a moment's notice. But it's a lot more dramatic to put "Disney Employees" in the headlines.
And still, we don't know what happened, and none of this makes it any less a tragedy.

Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
I wasn't there and I don't know what I would do in the same situation. I am trained in first aid and CPR and have been since my lifeguard days but I have never had to use my training (thank God). I would like to think I could at least jump in and help but I won't know until I am faced with that situation. I just don't see how we can blame the ride operators, they are not EMTs.

Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
I remember hearing in the past that the Reedy Creek fire/rescue dept is also run by Disney...they created the Reedy Creek district as the name for the "city" emcompassed by the WDW property to sort of separate themselves from Orlando. If this is the case, wouldn't the dispatcher be a Disney employee of some sort? From the sounds of the article, the call didn't go to the Orlando dispatch which has different regulations for what the dispatcher should ask the caller. Not that it really matters...just trying to figure out why they are calling out the CMs on M:S., when it sounds like the dispatcher is partially responsible also.

Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
I am also CPR certified. I have never used and don't know how I would react if I suddenly had to. The event that took place is tragic enough. I am certain every single person who attended to that child has asked themsleves 1,000 times what they could have done. I see the blame has now gone from the ride to the people who were there. I think we will see more and more about this. I'd like to keep my true opinion to myself until I see everything.

Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
Quite simply - I don't think this is a ride for 4 yr olds regardless of height, weight, or anything.
It's human nature to want to point blame and unfortunately this will end up in court somewhere because we are a lawsuit happy society. UNtil the autopsy report comes back you can't be too sure how or why and if even CPR coached through a dispatcher or given by the world's best CM would have avoided this tragedy. It's human nature to seek out reasons - How's and Why's. Information has surfaced that brought the dispatcher and CM into the picture and I'm sure no one had harmful attentions by the actions or lack of knowing what actions to take - It may have been an accident that couldn't have knowingly been avoided.

Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
First I am heart broken for this childs family and believe that we may never know what truely caused this mishap. Also, I agree with Laneysdad in that this ride is not for four-year-old children period. As far as the use of CPR in an emergancy, I have used my training more times than I can count but always in a hospital with other nurses and doctors present. I have seen other RNs panic, freeze and then be escorted out of a patient's room to be out of the way. Panic does different things to different people. I always became so focused on the patient that I would become completely calm until the code was over and then start to shake from the adrenalin. Other nurses would be able to pick up everything going on and still others would have to do the same thing with each code. My point is that training does not dictate how you react in an emergancy. Some act some freeze and some get panic attacks. The end result is that a child died and that is always very, very sad.

Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
The media can also slant any story any way that they want. True, the end result was tragic, but we were not there and do not really know what was said or done that was left out of the news story. I am sorry for the family's loss and I hope that Disney does everything in their power every day to prevent any accident on their property.
Also, does the media ever tell any stories about the CM that helped my child/family??? We never hear anything unless it is bad news, and that is something that Disney has to deal with, media-wise anyway. I am still sorry for that family...

Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
I've had to do CPR in the field a few times. The simple fact is, when you come upon a scene like that you don't know what has happened before you entered. For example: you don't know how the person got there, what caused them to go down, how long they've been unconscious or not breathing. You just have to jump in and hope for the best. Even for an ACLS certified professional, reviving someone in the field is a crapshoot at best.
My best guess is these people all thought the little boy had fainted...including the mother! Since it is Disney and it is very hot, that is the most common assumption. That's the kind of emergency they deal with every day. It would take a professional health care provider to jump ahead and check for respirations. I don't care if those poor CM's had been trained in CPR, it was not their fault that they didn't think a healthy appearing child had anything wrong with him other than the effects of the heat.

Re: Disney Employees' Response Questioned
I have to agree with Laneysdad...this is not a ride for a 4 year old. After all the stuff I have read on this I believe this little boy was literally scared to death. As for blame, I think that there are enough fingers pointing everywhere.
I hope that Disney does a proper review of what happened and improve their systems, preparedness, and response.
