Re: Line Rage at Disney!
Quote:
Just my conspiracy theory. Walt Disney World fingerprints visitors - Boing Boing Walt Disney World fingerprints visitors Posted by Cory Doctorow, September 1, 2006 7:01 AM | permalink Disney is now fingerprinting visitors to Walt Disney World as part of its ticket-fraud prevention scheme. They're not being very transparent about it, either: there are no signs posted about the data collection or retention, and Disney's official line is that they're not collecting fingerprints, just mathematical representations of same. But those mathematical representations are exactly what you need if you want to join up two fingerprint databases, like Disney's and the NSA's -- while the NSA may store photos of fingerprints, they work with hashes of them, using those mathematical representations to compare and sort prints. Saying that you only store the mathematical representations of a fingerprint is like saying that you only store the mathematical representations of a JPEG, not the actual paint, canvas and frame that it depicts. It's true, but it sure doesn't mean that you haven't captured something important. Now that our national immune system has begun to attack us in a terrible anaphylactic spasm -- indiscriminate NSA wiretaps, meaningless TSA security theater, secret aviation rules and no-fly lists, "free speech zones," suspension of habeas corpus and all the rest -- it's absolutely irresponsible to gather this kind of information and leave it where the savage toddlers of the national security apparat might find it and wreak havoc with it. For me, the worst part of this is that it conditions us to get used to being treated like crooks. If you were asked for a fingerprint when you bought a doughnut, you'd rightly leave the store. Why should an amusement park get a walk? For years, Disney has recorded onto tickets the geometry and shape of visitors’ fingers to prevent ticket fraud or resale, as an alternative to time-consuming photo identification checks. By the end of September, all of the geometry readers at Disney’s four Orlando theme parks, which attract tens of millions of visitors each year, will be replaced with machines that scan fingerprint information, according to industry experts familiar with the technology... However, the use of this technology has riled privacy advocates, who believe Disney has not fully disclosed the purpose of its new system. There are no signs posted at the entrance detailing what information is being collected and how it is being used. Attendants at the entrance will explain the system, if asked. But Disney's Prunty downplayed privacy issues, saying the scanned information is stored "independent of all of our other systems," and "the system purges it 30 days after the ticket expires or is fully utilized." Visitors who object to the readers can provide photo identification instead – although the option is not advertised at the park entrance... Coney fears Disney could share the fingerprint information. "If they maintain that data, it can be used for anything," Coney said. "If law enforcement shows up, they can gain access to it." Disney's privacy policy says that it may disclose personal information when doing so can help "protect your safety or security." ![]()

I know I'm coming in late on this, but are you people saying we aren't allowed to attack other people in line? Cuz that really puts a crimp in my vacation fun?

Re: Line Rage at Disney!
I just got back 6 hours ago and I have to say, I have never seen so many people ready to fight as I did this week. Lines were long and tempers short!
Security broke up what was turning into a ugly situation at the Tea Cups(whats up with the Tea Cups?) between a MA State Trooper and another guy. Same thing at the bus stop at the Poly.A bunch of guys were ready to go at it. The bus driver had to shut the doors to keep them apart.I even ran into a very rude and ignorant Brittish couple in line at the Epcot gate. This Heather Mills type "lady" and wuss of a husband really tried my patience but I let it go. I even let them go ahead of me, even though I wanted to tell then off so bad! I will never look at the UK Pavillion the same again! Still had a great trip but am starting to wonder where all the Disney magic is going!

Re: Line Rage at Disney!
I agree with Dixie. Try not to paint the brits with such a broad brush. I personally have never met a brit I didn't like. I think there can still be room in your heart for the UK pavilion.
![]() On another note... I hate encountering people with that me! me! me! mentality. These folks feel so disrespected when they might have to wait in a line or endure a little humidity. I think of it this way.... I only have to deal with them for a short time. They have to deal with themselves for a lifetime. I only wish they weren't invading the happiest place on earth. ![]()

Re: Line Rage at Disney!
I don't mind Disney having my fingerprints on file (if you've been in the military as I was your fingerprints are on file forever) or asking for a photo I.D.
But what I do mind are the people trying to enter a park who are asked for a photo I.D. and don't have one and cause a backup and forcing you to get in another line to enter. If they have some secret to hide in there life then maybe they shouldn't be out in public at all.

I agree totally with this. I also think that maybe they should share the prints with other files, like the pedifiles? I also have my fingerprints on file, working for the government. If you have nothing to hide, there really isn't an issue. It's just a shame that so many people try to cheat the systems that DW had to go to this extreme.

Re: Line Rage at Disney!
The whole thumbprint/scan thing doesn't bother me at all. I taught in 2 counties in my state that required me to be fingerprinted, and my prints are on file still with those school systems. I now work for an online education company, and I had to be printed in order to work for them. I don't plan on doing anything illegal EVER so there's no need for me to fear my prints being "out there."
