curiosity killed the cat

Did you know there has been 8 deaths in disney parks. Not to scare anybody. Most in DL(AKA people with a desease or dumb teens doing dares on moving rides). They should listen to the rules, stay in your seats and if you have medical problems stay away!

Except for the 2 unfortunate deaths in recent history at DL, most were years ago when there wasn't much security, rules, or no one knew what would happen if.....(Grad Nite). If you really want to get into the nitty gritty of Disney business a good to read is Mouse Tales by David Koenig. It's very interesting and it didn't deter me from going to the parks. It just made it more exciting after reading about this Corporate phenom we love as the Happiest Place on Earth!

When you think about it, 8 deaths in over 25 years is not so bad. Look at the deaths that happen at other amusement parks....way more than this

And you rarely hear about those because they're not Disney!

I know ...pretty sad when the media is so immune to other happenings and don't even find them to be news anymore, but they spring into action when something bad happens at Disney. Talk about discusting. I mean I don't mean to be disrespectful, but 8 people can die of natural causes in an amusment park in over 25 years.

I think the majority of those deaths were because people didnt follow the rules ..such as standing up on rides. A couple of years ago a boy climbed out of the splash mountian ride .. freaking all the castmembers out.

Re: curiosity killed the cat

I would like to start out by saying one death is too many.

But, with an operation like Disney, with all the parks that Disney has (FL, CA, France, Japan, etc) and the millions of people that visit them each year, that 8 deaths over 25 years doesn't sound too bad. And, as several of you said, many of these were not Disney's fault. I'm sure with all their security and watchful eyes on the rides, that they have saved hundreds of people from getting hurt (or killed), but of course we'll never hear about that, will we?

Re: curiosity killed the cat

I would gather that the number of deaths would likely be close to what one could calculate as statistically expected based on numbers of guests over the time period.

Causes of some of the deaths:

1. Standing up on Matterhorn at DL
2. Jumping from one Peoplemover car to another during the ride
3. Climbing up and walking on the monorail track (crushed to death after refusing to heed a security guard's pleas to jump down)

Re: curiosity killed the cat

I do remember reading about a youngster at DL whom had his foot amputated on the Thunder Mt. Railroad ride. Apparently the ride stops temporarily as it enters the station and he thought it was time to get out. He put his foot out and the ride started again. I always try to keep my young ones on the inside, with adults or older children to the outside, for this reason. I also remember being on space mt. in WDW in the early 1980's, when a guest had an apparent heart attack on the ride. The CM stopped the attraction and people had to walk down escape exits. I don't know if that gentleman died or turned out okay. You know accidents can happen anywhere (that's why they are called accidents). But common sense can go a long way.

Re: curiosity killed the cat

8 deaths over 25 years is an excellent statistic (not saying that any death is a good thing) considering the number of deaths that occur in other theme parks. At least Disney is honest. I worked for a theme park a few years back and over the course of one summer, 3 people were killed and I must say it was all their own fault for not following directions. There's a reason why they say to stay seated until the ride comes to a complete stop and there is a reason for harnesses and lap bars. The difference between Disney and my former employer is that Disney admits that tragedy can and does happen within their gates. We had people pronounced dead on the way to the hospital so it would not show up on our records or in the news.
