Re: passports
I think you will need one if you are leaving the US at any point on the cruise.

I'd get one anyway. You already have to have one to reenter the US by air now and if you miss the boat somewhere you'll be flying back. Get one and don't worry about it.

Re: passports
I recently booked my cruise for Nov. 2007 and I booked it now, because they said that starting Jan. 08 you have to have passports for cruises. As of now you only have to have passports for air travel. We applied for our children's however I don't believe we will get them in time. We have 4 kids and wasn't able to do them all at one time. I say do one a payday. It cost about $90 and is only good for 5 years for kids.

Re: passports
As of right now you will need them and since they recently reimplemented the air requirement and they are caught up with the crush, I doubt they will postpone again.
My personal opinion is just get them. If someone can plan/book a cruise a year or so in advance then they can plan on getting a passport in plenty of time before the cruise. When they had the original deadline a couple of years ago, when I booked my cruise that would fall after the original deadline, the next thing I did was get a photo and head to the post office to submit the application. That way I had no stress about how long it was going to take etc. like all of the people that were whining this spring/summer. |

Re: passports
They keep changing the deadlines but I would go ahead and get one now. It will be a lot easier for you on the cruise. You have time now to do it and it will be worth it to know its done just in case.

Re: passports
This was supposed to go into effect like 3 yrs ago and they kept pushing the deadline back. I would be surprised if they did it again though. What they did do this year was make an allowance for the people who got caught in the rush of applications. They allowed you to use your other ID's if you also showed a receipt for application for passport.
No matter what, I would strongly advise getting your passport and get it now! The process is so slow and believe me when I tell you it gets stressful to be worrying about it arriving in time. Oh yes...and get TWO copies of your birth certificate: one to send in with your passport application and one to keep at home in the meantime.

Re: passports
Good news on the passport front. We applied for DS's(for our April trip) in mid Sept and we got it back last week. They seem to be caught up for the time being. But, still apply well ahead of time to be on the safe side.

Re: passports
I would also apply ASAP. We applied very early for ours last year and didn't receive them for months. The State Dept is telling people 10 weeks, but they were telling us that when they knew very well that most people were waiting 16+ weeks.
