Re: Sea sick

There is usually one night on a cruise that I feel BLAH. I do not take any sea sick medicines, but there are so much out there. Dramamine is a great one, but you have to remember to start taking it a few days before you leave. Also, the ships these days are soooo huge, that you really don't feel much movement- you just see it if you are outside or looking out a window.

Re: Sea sick

I got very sick on our first night. Coming through the Florida straights we had 10-14 foot waves. We were told by the crew that this happens occasionally and often people get sick when the surf is rough. Fortunately, I felt better the second day and for the rest of the trip. I recommend going to your doctor and getting motion sickness patches. There are also Sea Bands, Dramamine, ginger, and you can take Sudafed. None of the above made me feel better, however, and the Dramamine made me sleepy as well.

Re: Sea sick

My mom gets motion sickness a lot, but we cruise all of the time, and it rarely bothers her onboard. However, if we have an excursion with a long boat ride....

The ship is so big, that it doesn't rock much. I don't even notice it. My mom does have a night or two where she has to take a lot of dramamine, but no terrible motion sickness.

However, I do think it depends on when and where you're cruising. Cruising the Caribbean has been a little more rough than cruising Alaska, where the water seems very still.

Re: Sea sick

I wouldn't spend the money to go on a cruise if you get sick. I've never been on a cruise & I don't think I ever will go on one. As a child my dad had a large boat & every weekend we went out on the boat as a family. I hated it because I got sick every weekend! I know several people who always get sick on cruises because of the water & germs...But my mother loves cruises. Next year she will take her 2nd 6 week cruise to London, Iceland, etc...Last year she got a picture of Santa Claus' mailbox. It was the size of my garage! She never gets sick but on a cruise she said she takes Dramadine because there can be some rough days.

Re: Sea sick

Having grown up on the water I would recommend keeping Dramamine in your system. The biggest piece of advice I can offer is to keep your mind on other things, try not to focus on if the boat is rocking or not. I've seen so many people on cruises and fishing boats sitting there just thinking about the boat rocking then they start feeling sick and eventually . Try to keep your mind busy on having fun. (not always easy but....try)

Re: Sea sick

The Disney ships are incredibly stable! Very rarely do you encounter rocking! Even when you do, just stay inside the decks, shopping, watching a movie in the theatre, or hanging out in one of the clubs!

We encountered some rough seas a couple years ago on our first 7 day cruise, but it really wasn't that bad!

I hear those patches really do work well! We didn't use them because we just sort of "got on with it" so to speak!

I always take the 24 hour non-drowsy Dramamine - just in case. I've never been sick but I don't want to be!

Re: Sea sick

I am very prone to motion sickness. I have taken Bonine once a day on our cruises and never had any problems. DH always waits to see how he feels and ususally feels a bit bad the first night.

Go ahead and book the cruise and just take the Bonine the day before you get on the ship and onward. You will be fine!

Re: Sea sick

VERY little movement on these ships. More in your head - well actually it REALLY is because it's an inner ear thing.

We had 10 foot seas and the only motion was a little bit of the hangers rocking ever so slightly in the closet.

Suggest you try a 3 day cruise. Never at sea that long and give you a feel for crusiing.

Do you have to have a prescription for the patches? I am cruising next Friday and am very concerned about this. On our last (and only other) cruise, I took dramamine but ended up sleeping through at least half of the cruise because it made me so drowsy.

On the first night I got sick on one of the housekeeping girls in the hallway because I just could not make it back to my room...I felt so bad for her! I couldn't even look at her face, I was so embarrassed.
