passing the time away

We're so excited about our trip in March. It's the first time in five years that DH and I are actually excited about taking a flying trip. Last flying trip was to Russia to adopt our now 8-year-old and spent over 54 hours in an airplane or airport within eight days time. It was major overdose, even for us. Had NO desire to fly up until now. DS was 3 at the time and slept a lot, fortunately. Now he's 8 and very excited, but it's his first trip that he'll remember on an airplane. Are portable video games/DVD players a good idea on airplanes? I'm more concerned about a four-hour-layover on the return trip. Any suggestions to pass the time away at the Minneapolis airport? I'd love to be able to say that reading books is a great option but he has dyslexia and reading isn't one of his favorite things to do. He loves being read to so we'll build some of that into our flight/layover. I'd love other ideas!

Re: passing the time away

Hand-held games work wonders. I take them for myself on the planes. That and any kind of puzzle books. AS for the four hour lay-over, try grabbing a meal in one of the restaurants and taking your time. Maybe bring a board game or something that could take some time to play. My Dd and I will play rummy or something like crazy eights. If you play to 500 it will take some time to do.

Gameboy or a MP3 player has worked for us.

Re: passing the time away

Thanks, Dana. Those are some good ideas. He loves board games. (As long as they don't take up our souvenir space. LOL ) If we allow him to take his GameBoy, do we have to rely on battery power on an airplane or are there outlets? (That's a big if at this point.)

Re: passing the time away

Thanks, PKC. I never thought of music. That's a good one, too. Did you rely on battery power for GameBoy?

I think you have to rely on battery power on the plane, unless you are in business or first class - they may have outlets. But I know coach does not. I usually take my laptop to watch movies, but have to change batteries before the movie is over !
What about the small sized travel games they have at walmart? I have see checkers, connect four, etc. Same game, just smaller and not very expensive.

Re: passing the time away

What about portable DVD players? Has anyone ever had trouble getting them on or using them on a plane? I know there are restrictions sometimes to electronic devices, and this will be the first time we've tried to bring the players along....
