I would make that recommendation too, with Busch Gardens there, Water Country and also a soon to be open indoors water park resort and also Norfolk and Virginia Beach nearby there is enough for every age to enjoy.

I second Gatlinburg, TN!! Dollywood is great for kids as well as Splash Country! We live 20 minutes away and have a great time each time we take the kids. The mountains are beautiful and the atmosphere is family oriented. Good food and shopping!!

If you want to do something non-Disney, and not the beach, why not do something such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sequoia, the Grand Canyon...something like that? Or maybe a camping trip?

If waterparks are your thing, Wisconsin Dells is worth checking out. It's the waterpark capital of the US!! Indoor waterparks. Outdoor waterparks. And lots of other "tourist stuff" too, but the waterparks are awesome! There's other amusement park stuff around the city and extreme rides (bungee jumping, etc.) and sightseeing tours up and down the Wisconsin River, and waterski shows. Endless choices of family fun! (Geez, I sound like a commercial for Wisconsin Dells. Sorry. )

My vote is for Washington, DC. Lots to see, monuments, etc. The Smithsonian museums are AWESOME and all FREE. National Zoo is great too and also FREE....

Lived near there as a kid and for the first few years my parents told me the Museum of Natural History was the zoo...lots of animals, free and air conditioned! Eventually we caught on that the animals never moved!

I live in Virginia. My children are 3 and 6. There is so much to do in our state that we have not been able to do it all. We are going to disney next year for the first time. So, this year we got season passes to Kings Dominion in Richmond, Va. ( the price was great, your get one price for a family of 4. We paid around $260. We bought it last fall and got in free for 2-3 months in 2004. You also get in free to other Paramont parks.) They have plenty of rides for small ones. My children love the new scooby doo ride. They also have a water park, included in your admission price.

We are also going to go to Washington, DC. We will get on the subway outside of the city and see the museums and the zoo. All FREE!!! except subway.

Portsmouth has a boat ride that goes thru the navel shipyard. The children love seeing the big ships up close. Virginia beach has several museums. We took are daughter when she was 3 and she enjoyed them. Bush Gardens is close by.

We will also be taking a trip up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is beautiful in the summer. We want to take the children to a park near the parkway in Roanoke. Can't remember the name, but they should enjoy this.

Baltimore Inner Harbor in Maryland is a nice place to visit.

Forgot to tell you about something new coming to my area. I live in the Shenadoah Valley. Massaunutten Resort, a ski resort, is opening its new indoor water park sometime in the summer of 2005.

Re: We all know that Disney is the best...

Oh darn, both of mine have been mentioned already. My 2 favorite vacation spots are Gatlinburg and Williamsburg. I'll try to expand on it a little, and make this post actually worth something. I'd suggest anywhere in the Smoky Mountains - there's so much to do! We usually go horseback riding, tubing, hiking, all that outdoorsy stuff. This year we're going whitewater rafting! Don't know how I feel about that yet. Anyways, my vote is for the mountains.
