flying on Thanksgiving weekend
We are planning a trip starting 11/27 to 12/11, that means flying out of Phila. on Sunday 11/27. The 28 is my birthday and I really really wanted to be at disney for that. My question is, does anyone have thoughts about flying that weekend? You always hear it's so awful. I don't want to start a trip on a bad note, if it's really that bad.

Re: flying on Thanksgiving weekend
Good luck. That Sunday will be very busy to start with as everyone will be on there way back home. Factor in the chance of snow, rain, ice etc. Do you have a direct flight or does it connect? If it stops over somewhere you will have to consider the conditions at that airport. How early is the flight you are going to take from Phily? I usualy try for the first flight of the day so you don't have to worry about your plane coming in from somewhere else.

We don't have tickets yet. Still not a hundred percent sure we are going. We have room reservations and that's it. A whole lot can happen that may change our plans and we wouldn't want to be locked into tickets yet.

Re: flying on Thanksgiving weekend
We haven't flown Tgivng but we did fly 3 days before Christmas..WHAT A MAD HOUSE! We had to land at LAX for a 3 hour layover and all the flights were overbooked and delayed..it was really miserable. Our 3 hour layover turned into 5 hours on the floor b/c there wasn't a set available in the entire airport.
If you do fly during Tgiving weekend, I would book a direct flight and expect some delays or even possibly getting bumped if the flights are overbooked. Just go into it knowing it may be a mad house, pop a few St. Johns wort capsules, and have a great vacation!

I wouldn't do it that's for sure! Not only is there the increased traffic to e aware of but you will likely find that the airlines jack up their prices by a few hundred bucks that weekend. Last year, we flew on Christmas Day and we saved almost $1000 on 2 tickets as opposed to the 24th or 26th (everyone else wants to be at their destination for Christmas).

Re: flying on Thanksgiving weekend
So true Chiasgirl..we paid $228 a person, roundtrip, from Orlando to Portland, Oregon..we took off Dec 21st and flew home on New Years Eve(we got on the plane at 11:55pm)..that was $220 cheaper per person than if we flew home the next day or the day before..I guess no one wants to fly during prime NYEve party time. We didn't mind..we usually fall asleep at 10:30 anyway so I was all for saving $900 on our tickets!

Re: flying on Thanksgiving weekend
Does anyone think flying on Friday or Saturday that weekend would be any better? I have thought just to fly out on Monday morning. Last trip we had a 6:30 ish flight and was at disney by 10:30.

Re: flying on Thanksgiving weekend
I think it would be just as bad jo jo. A lot of people go for the day and come home Friday/Sat and the airport would still be a Zoo. If I had to choose, I'd fly on Monday when almost everyone is back at work and not in the airport. Your tickets should be cheaper that way too.

Re: flying on Thanksgiving weekend
We have flown twice over Thanksgiving. Once to Miami and once to LA. It really was not that bad. Just get to the airport early and expect that you will spend some time waiting in line . We got to the airport 2 1/2 hours before our flight. This was plenty of time to check in and go through security. Also use the sky cab if possible it helps with wait time.
Have a good trip! |

Re: flying on Thanksgiving weekend
I know it was asking for trouble to fly that day, but I was hoping it wasn't as bad as you see on TV. I really really wanted to spend my 50 th birthday at disney, but I guess you can't have everything. Thanks everyone.

Re: flying on Thanksgiving weekend
I haven't flown that weekend, but as a college student I took Amtrack home a lot. One Sunday-after-Thanksgiving the crowds were so bad about a dozen off us had to ride in a baggage car, sitting on piled up luggage (still charged us full price too!). After that, my parents drove me back to school at Thanksgiving.
I'd bet that Monday flight you mentioned would be much calmer. What day is your b-day?

Re: flying on Thanksgiving weekend
My birthday is the 28 th of Nov. That a monday. That's why I thought of sunday the 27th, so I could spend the whole day at the different parks. Last time we had a 6:30 flight, I think we got up at 3 a.m. and by 6 or 7 in the evening we were ready for sleep. (I know we are old) But I don't want to get bumped or put on a plane that goes thru texas to get to orlando. I'm thinking monday will have to do.
