Which stroller for big kid?

I've finally decided that personal strollers from home is the way to go. However, does anyone have any suggestions for a stroller for a "big kid?" My son is 6 years old, 44 inches tall and 38 lbs. The stroller we used in previous years is too small (his head can't fit under the canopy). If possible, I'm interested in a light weight stroller with a canopy and basket (does a stroller like this exist?). Thanks for all of your help.

I don't know the brand names of the strollers, but in my quest to find the perfect stroller (and I have spent countless hours looking) I found the best place to find the stroller that is just right for you is the Baby Depot at burlington coat factory, if you have one in your area go. They have every kind of stroller I got a really nice tandem stroller with cup holders and a big basket. It took a long time to pick because there were so many. the price is right too.

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

We wanted to bring our own stroller for our trip. Did some Internet research for a fairly inexpensive one (spending about what we would have if we rented one every day). Bought a Combi Saavy Soho Sport that holds up to 45 lbs. Our 5 yo is 5-1/2, 45 " and 50 lbs. (hope it holds him). It's the only one we could find that held the heavier weight. Most only held up to 35-40 lbs. (unless you got a $200 stroller which we weren't about to do!) We just got it but haven't tested it out yet. Will let you know when we do.

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

Well, we finally opened the box and took the stroller out. We had to laugh when 5 yo DS got in it. He is way too big for it. His head pushes against the canopy, his feet touch the ground, and it doesn't look like it would survive all day being pushed around in the parks. It's a great looking stroller, and I would definitely buy one for a smaller child. But my guy is just too big. We're shipping it back for a full refund. So, I think we're just going to have to rent the park strollers.

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

Is there health issues for the reason wanting the stroller for 6 year old? My DD was 6 when we took her to WDW the first time and we had told her before we got there that we would NOT be renting a stroller or carrying her all over the parks all day long. She did absolutely fine without stroller or carrying. We took breaks when I felt she needed it and when she told me she wanted to sit down for awhile.

If there is no health issues, I would say forget the stroller and have him walk like a "big boy".

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

We are in the same boat with our 6 year old. He is getting too big for the cheapo umbrella strollers. We may end up renting one if he doesn't fit in the stroller we have. We are going with another family so getting a double stroller seems like the way to go if he doesn't fit in what we have.

dizneeluvr, I understand what you are saying but not all kids are the same. My son is a healthy kid (for the most part, he has some heart issues) but walking from park open to park close is too much for him and his little legs even with a break. If he is happy we are all happy and a worn out kid can ruin a trip. If a stroller makes a little one happy then it seems so simple, get a stroller no matter what the age of the child. I also like having a place to stick our rain gear when we don't need it.

I agree completely! I like taking a stroller to carry all of our stuff in the basket and ours has cup holders in it too. I will be sad when we can't take a stroller any more.

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

I'm torn beteen both of your good points. I'm sure for the most part we'd be pushing an empty stroller (except for our bag we'll stow away in it). But I've read from so many people that the strollers are a life saver when the child gets the least bit "lazy" or "tire of walking." Since we'll be using WDW transportation the whole time, and this is our first vacation there and want to see a lot, there are a few days where we plan to be "on the go" from 8am 'til evening. Guess we'll just have to take it as it comes.

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

Without reading all the posts above, they had some pretty big strollers at WDW in November. My kids could have almost! fit in them and they are BIG boys.

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

Ok, I know this is really sad, but my 8 yr old dd needed a stroller in Dec. She's the tallest kid in her class, but only weighs around 55 lbs. We used a Kolkraft umbrella stroller from Toys R Us, Babies R Us and she did just fine in that. (She's probably 55 inches tall). She looked like a big goofus in it, but it kept her from whining (and for $20, it was worth it), and there was no fighting w/her 2 yr old brother.

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

My DH thinks if there were no strollers at any of the parks they would be much better for everybody to get around. He says that if you need to use a stroller because your older children complains of being tired, it would then be best for everybody to leave the park and go and have a rest.

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

We have always rented a stroller at WDW. I love the strollers there. They are huge and perfect for napping, because they can actually lay down in them!! On our last couple of trips we rented the double for our 2 kids. This year my daughter will be 9, so I don't imagine she'll need to ride. But I'm willing to bet when my DS is out of the stroller, she'll sneak in!!

My 10 year old neice even ended up in our stroller on our last trip (she's the size of an 8 yr old) and had her own by the last day. To me it's worth the money. We get around the park faster with them riding, we don't have to hear them complain, and we don't like to stop and go back to the room to rest. We have always spent the ENTIRE day there, from open to close. My kids always took their naps in those great big strollers! As many have said, they're also great for storing your things!!

Re: Which stroller for big kid?

McClaren Volo. I have that for my 41 lb almost 5 year old and she has room to grow in it.

I got it on sale for $50 at Right Start a few months ago.

I went to DL this morning with dd, and left the stroller in the car. We were there not even 3 hours. I had to carry her to the tram station.
