Kids and passports

FYI... our travel agent told us that to take our kids to Mexico in February, we will now be required to present passports for them, instead of the usual birth certificates. Also, the Candian rules ar echanging too in the next year, where everyone will need a passport to fly into Canada.

Just wanted to let you all know, in case you want to go outside the country (DLP or DLT?) any time soon... it takes some effort, money and time to get passports for kids!

Re: Kids and passports

Any where outside US including Mexico, Bahamas, & Cananda will require passports. Birth certificates and drivers licenses will no longer be accepted as proof. Yes, even the kiddies. Adult passports are valid for 10 years and kids are 5 years.

One more step in "winning" our war on terror. Thank god they wouldn't THINK of forging passports.

Was supposed to have been in effect already but was pushed back to 2007.

Re: Kids and passports

we were told that it is now June of 2009 if you are on a cruise- but if you fly in and out of ANY country a passport is now required- We had to get them for all of us including the baby. And now the laws are changed yet again- what a waste of $$ for us!

I've never had a passport.

Are they expensive?

Are kids cheaper than adults?

I don't get out much.

Re: Kids and passports

We have them for ourselves and kids, DD(6) and DS(1).
Children's passports are a little less than adults. I think when we got our it was around $80.00 for an adult. Child maybe 10- 20 less. You can do it at your local post office. They have all the prices and info there.

With all the security issues in airports we bring them whenever we fly, in or out of the US. It just makes it easier . JMO!

Re: Kids and passports

Thanks for the info. Interestingly, my passport was not considered acceptable proof of US citizenship when we moved here to NC and I had to get my NC driver's license!! What did they want? A social security card. We have had six exchange students/ au pairs who were each granted a social security card. None of them were US citizens. Go figure...

And half of the 9/11 hijackers had Virginia Driver's Licenses as I recall. Needless to say things have tightened ID wise at VA DMV since then.

Re: Kids and passports

What I dont understand is why the baby is not on a year to year basis- he will not look the same in two years at all! And why cant we just update the info for limited $$ why do I have to pay for the kids all over again in 5 years?

Re: Kids and passports

I find the passport forms kinda confusing. Can someplace like AAA help with them? I'd gladly pay a fee for someone else to do them!
My DH and I need passports because we're planning a trip to St. Croix next year. It's a US territory, but we figure it's best to have one. Anybody know if we really do need one or not?

Re: Kids and passports

We've had big changes too with the Passport service, including having babies passports and the introduction of bio metric passports for USA entry. Of course this is all since the terrorist attacks and everyone is Ok with this if it makes a difference to safety. However, the UK Passport Office is so fussy that the form and photo have to be perfect that there has been quite alot in the media about this.
