Caution: New XRAYS HURT FILM!

Two different people have had their film ruined by the new XRAY machines for CHECKED baggage (both exposed and unexposed).:madmad Be WARNED: DON'T PUT FILM IN A SUITCASE TO BE CHECKED!!! You must carry it on. The new super improved xray machines ruin film (the old, post 9/11 ones didn't). You still should have no problem with putting film through the xray for carry-on bags. It doesn't have the same same super strength.

You are quite right about the checked baggage machines. The carry on machines are safe for 400asa and slower film, however, I still always ask for a hand check. If you take all your film out of the box, and put the containers into a plastic bag, they are usually pretty good about it.

The only place I've ever had a problem asking for a hand check was in Heathrow Airport in London, they have gotten really hard core about x-raying everything!

film safes

We learned that this could happen to film and was told to go out and purchase a film safe. It is a lead lined bag that fits about 20 rolls of film. We had it in our carry on bag and when it went through we were ask what was in it and we said film. I suppose they might ask you to open it since thay cant see though it but we we not. At least it would keep it from being distroyed and it would have to be hand checked. They cost about $20 and can be reused time and time again. You can get them at a camera store.

PS.. I think I learned about the safes here at this site. one of the many things that I have learned here:) :)

I flew to Seattle and took the film as a carry-on. I asked the security person at the gate and he stated that the passenger and carry-on screening did not hurt film, but keeping it in your luggage might. I was using Kodak 35mm film and all of the pictures came out great. In fact, as I am typing this, I just remembered my wife is in D.C., and I'll have to remind her about this!
