Packing tips

I wanted to start a thread with tips on smart packing since so many of us seem to be really into packing! :D

Here's mine:

Buy a few of those bags that you can put clothes in and then roll all of the air out of (w/o a vaccum). I have to use those when I go places like WDW because I just can't pack light! Plus, I can easily wear 3-4 pairs of shoes on one vacation and that's just too much for one suitcase when it's full of clothes too. DH's shoes are also big as are his clothes (he's 6'2") and can take up lots of space. Those bags are awesome for larger things like beach towels or a sweater.

Good luck with your packing everyone!

Re: Packing tips

You have to watch out for those space bags though. I used them two trips ago and got lots of stuff into the luggage....so much stuff that it cost me and my mom $25 per bag on the way home because they were more than 25lbs at the airport. This past year I left the space bags at home and took two suitcases. I had the extra room but also had a total of 50lbs to play with (25 per bag).

Re: Packing tips

Be sure to pack "the medicine cabinet - cough syrup, pain pills, bandaids, safety pins, sewing kit, eye drops, etc...." it's cheaper than having to buy on resort. pack everything in ziplock bags in case they leak.

Re: Packing tips

I loved the list but I do have a suggestion.. Don't pack the baby. They tend not to like being stuffed in a bag (although my DD has climbed into her father's sea bag).. Honestly though, if you are traveling with a baby on an airplane make sure you bring at least 1 diaper per every 2 hours and at least one change of outfit in your carry on. Don't want to have a poop incident and nothing to change the baby into. If your baby take a pacifier make sure to bring extras of his favorites, just in case one gets lost.
Also, if you are flying with a baby make sure you have something for the baby to suck on during takeoff and landing. It helps with their ears and yours since it will lessen the chance of them having a melt down in the middle of your flight.

weigh the stuff with the suitcase first them use the bags. You can also save money if you get the paper delivered to your house and just save the bags they come in and use them. a gallion ziplock bag works for undies and socks.

Re: Packing tips

The best tip I ever read (& used) for packing my son's clothes was to put complete outfits in those gallon sized ziplock bags (shirt, shorts, socks & underwear). It keeps the matching sets together and when he's ready to get dressed he just grabs a bag and there's no digging through the suitcase to find the "shirt that goes with those shorts", etc.

He's seven now and his clothes are getting bigger but as long as they're summer clothes they will still fit into the baggies. The empty bags are also great for wet swimsuits on the last day, dirty socks & underwear, pretty much anything you want to segregate in your suitcase for the trip home!!

Re: Packing tips

Reminder to check air line with what can be carried on. With the new guidelines I think I will be making a stop for a few things when I get there.

I'm still doing that for my son! He turned 9 this summer and his clothes still fit. It's so nice to have a whole outfit in one bag so he can get dressed and I don't have to worry about him wearing the wrong shirt with a pair of shorts and ending up with clothes that don't match left.

I'll be sad when I have to stop packing him in bags, it makes mornings so easy.

Re: Packing tips

Our family of 6 travelled to WDW in July this year. It really wasn't practical for us to pack outfits for 6 people for 14 days! We used the capsule wardrobe approach when putting together your travel wardrobe; make sure that everything is interchangeable. We elected to do laundry during our trip - a bit of pain, but a lot cheaper than paying $25 per piece of overweight luggage!

We also took clothes that we could wash and dry easily in our room - moisture wicking clothes are perfect for this.

Also pack one of those gizmo with multiple clothespins - it came in handy for drying swimsuits in a small space!

Re: Packing tips

My tip - don't do a suitcase for each person - put a mix of each persons stuff in each suitcase. that way if one gets lost, someone isn't missing all their stuff!
