Re: REALLY getting worried about airfare.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I am going to try & check back as often as possible, especially around holidays to see if the fares drop, like Dana said. I just DO NOT see how they are going to fill the planes, like the companies WANT to do, to Florida on Spring Break... with those prices!

We'll come up with SOMETHING... I hope. [sigh] I think it's just becoming a BIGGER reality that perhaps we won't be able to take as many trips per year as we've become ridiculously accustomed too because of airfare. We got SO used to saying, "Hey, you wanna go to WDW in a couple months... I saw cheap airfare!" That was always the tipping point that would make Daniel say "Sure, can't refuse cheap airfare!" I hope those days aren't over !!!

Thank you for the words of encouragement everyone, maybe Stitch will let me borrow that wacky teleporter or something!

hehe, my principal would TOTALLy understand... it's really our superintendant who's REALLY strict about the "day before & after a holiday" thing. He'll send out these "nasty grams" we call them & I guess he really keeps track of these things. I work in a REALLY TINY district so you feel like you can't get away with anything. Versus when I worked in Palm Beach County, I was just a number amongst thousands.

Oh, I guess I should have mentioned that I have to take two days off in October AFTER a holiday 'cause we'll be in WDW. haha, I kinda left that part out. So obviously I don't want to push it with Spring Break.

Wish, I have found that airfare drops on Fridays - it used to be the middle of the week but it has changed

Re: REALLY getting worried about airfare.

i am going to be in the same boat for our cruise. Right now we are too far out to book for next May but later this month or next month i will be searching as well.

I really hate to drive 2 hours to another airport but if the fares are better for Southwest i will have to do it.

I've considered flying out of NY, Philly, or Atlantic City. Although, our ride to the airport is my Dad and he is ABSOLUTELY adiment about NOT driving us anywhere except to Newark, or POSSIBLY Atlantic City. He refuses to bring us to NY or Philly. Philly is like 2 hours away anyway.

Re: REALLY getting worried about airfare.

ok, so when is the absolute latest you can leave home and when does the ship leave? I have a few suggestions...

1. look into leaving out of another airport (as others suggested)... philly, baltimore, Wilmington; i am saving $150 with Amtrak by leaving out of DC instead of Philly.
2. how early is the earlier flight on your last day? if the ship is in by 8am and they know you need to make a flight...
3. if you drive right thru leave NJ by 4pm, you could be in FL by noon-ish. it would be long and tiresome, but still cheaper than $1000 for flying even at $4/gallon.
4. pixie dust and magic will carry you thru... and the fares will come down!

Re: REALLY getting worried about airfare.

I agree - the airlines are out of control now - using the high gas prices as an excuse....but I digress....

I ALWAYS fly Continental - and I've always gotten a good deal - WELL NO MORE!!! They have reduced the number of flights to Orlando by 30% (because it has a very low profit margin for them). This, plus the fuel increase has caused them to increase their prices drastically. For my trip in October, I got $104 each way on Jet Blue. The price was $318 rt on Continental. So goodbye to Continental, hello JETBLUE.

The rates for Jetblue aren't up yet for April 2009 (they probably won't release the April 2009 fares for another 2 months or so).

I monitor flights for a few months before I purchase, and they usually go down. For my last trip (May 2008) I checked in January (EWR - MCO via Continenatal) and the price was $368 rt pp - when I booked in February it was $202 rt pp. I still monitored it after I purchased - and it got down to $178 - but I was happy with the $202 - so I didn't feel too bad.

It's a good idea that you will monitor the prices as much as possible. Keep your eye on JetBlue - I have a feeling this will be your best bet.

Can you spend Saturday night in Orlando (at a cheaper hotel - lots of places outside WDW for under $100), and then fly out first thing Sunday the 19th? This might reduce the price too.

By the way - a really cool website is Yapta - Track Airfares, Save Money . You can put in the flights you want to watch, and it will keep checking the fare for you. I use it all the time. It is pretty awesome. yapta will also store your reservations, and if the fare that you purchased drops dramatically, it will let you know that you can receive a credit. Check it out. I usually put in all the flights I'm looking at, and then just need to click a button to see if the price has changed.

Sorry for the long winded post - hope it helps!!
