Re: Packing some grocery items? Tips please.

I would just get what food I need when I'm down there. Is it really worth the chance that you might have bagel crumbs and wrecked food? I know just packing my kids lunch boxes & them riding the bus, their snacks can get smashed....Oh and those airlines are horrible. Delta lets you take the 1st bag free and the second is $25.00. The carry on's can't weigh more than 40 lbs and absolutely no beverages of any kind can be brought onto the plane. So, if you take that extra suitcase be careful. I know Delta states ours can't be over 50 lbs or it's an $80.00 fee. If the suitcase is over 61" it's $175.00 fee on top of it.

Re: Packing some grocery items? Tips please.

we packed a lot of oatmeal bars- they are the square ones that you can buy in stores now. They fill you up and they acted as both breakfast and snack bars. I love them and they were in an easy packed box.

SEPTEMBER 6th . . . $15 dollars a bag baby . . . STINKS!!!!!!

I am flying up Thanksgiving and Xmas . . . ticket alone cost me MORE and now I gotta check and PAY for bags . .. insane!!

Double check the site . . . it's all there!! (um hope no one else posted this, saw this comment and made my blood boil .. . I mean WHAT are we paying for?)

I wouldn't bother packing food ... since we drive I ALWAYS bring all this food, we never eat, it gets all smashed up and I chuck it . . . cheaper just to buy a snack or two when you get there .. . IMHO!!

Oh then that is perfect. I think they must be the only airline left that doesn't charge. Bring some cereal bars or oatmeal bars.

Re: Packing some grocery items? Tips please.

Don't forget to pack a real knife in that box for cutting those bagels or apples. The plastic ones don't do much. We had brought a real knife along also in case we got a pizza and sometimes those aren't cut well.

Re: Packing some grocery items? Tips please.

Packing grocery items can be hit or miss. You are putting your food in the hands of the baggage people...get stuff that won't break or get squished if it gets thown around. Chips wouldn't be a good idea unless you get pringles which may survive a disgruntled baggage handler.. Seriously now, I think you should just get a grocery delivery...works out nice when you use Garden Grocer. You are staying at OKW right? I used garden grocer on one of my stays there and they totally took care of me...OKW sent them to my room etc (after calling me of course) and they unloaded and put all my stuff away. I would totally use them again.

Re: Packing some grocery items? Tips please.

Jess, you have a full week still. Why don't you just pack up a box and ship it to yourself. The US Post Office is really cheap on this kind of thing, and I bet you have plenty of time if you get it done today or tomorrow!

This way when we get there all I will have to buy is milk, small cream cheese package, and a couple yogurts.
Be careful if you tape the box. Security may check the bag and they may tear the tape in order to check the contents of the box. The last thing you need is food all over your bag. It seems everytime I fly now either myself or some one I'm flying with gets one of those FAA flyers advising that your bag has been searched.

Re: Packing some grocery items? Tips please.

Jess -
We always use the snap-locking platic containers to pack in the check-thru bags. We fill ours with spillables (medicine, hairspray, perfume, etc.) instead of food, but I think they'd be good for food too. Be sure it snaps locks so you don't have to tape it. There is probably a good chance they will untape it when your luggage goes thru the scanner and then the lid won't be replaced as tight as when you packed it. Those containers come in all sizes and some are perfect for bagels. For your trip home you can fill them with stuff you bought - ornaments, MM rice krispies, etc. and they'll arrive back home in one piece.
Have a great trip!

That's actually a really good idea. Plus all of your food would be protected from getting crushed.

Re: Packing some grocery items? Tips please.

I love the plastic shoebox idea, we used a metal brownie pan with a lid, but we were taking it to return to MIL anyway. Also, I pack things like peanuts, sunflower kernels in ziploc freezer bags. They're a little sturdier, but they sqish around other stuff that's in there. We always take Pop-Tarts and breakfast bars to snack on and for breakfast.
