My overnight Odyssey in Hartsfield International Airport

I'm back from New York,a lot later than I thought!!!! Our plane was scheduled to leave LaGuardia Airport at 6 pm Sunday. About 5 o'clock, the announcement came over the PA that due to thunderstorms in Atlanta, our plane would be delayed an hour. well,we finally took off AFTER 8:30 and arrived in Atlanta at 10:35. We thought our plane would be delayed too, but,no,it left on time at 10:30. We immediately got stand-by status on the earlier scheduled flight that WAS delayed(go figure!!),and one of us missed the cut by one person. So we spent the night in the lovely environs of Concourse D listening to the stupid safety message more times than I care to remember. Oh,did I mention that it was freezing from the air conditioning? I was wearing a pair of shorts,a pair of jeans,a top and my nightgown,I was so cold. I got a taste of knowing what being homeless must feel like and it was not nice,to say the least. Thank God I'm home now!!!

Oh my goodness Alma, how awful. I don't fly anymore. I bet you are tired! I wouldn't be able to sleep with all those people around!

Actually, between 1 am and 6 am it was practically deserted. It just felt a bit creepy, that's all. I'm glad my mother was with me.

I hear and sympathize with you...I'm a frequent business traveller and I've been stranded a few times. And yes, overnight at the airport can be very creepy - nothing's open and the only people are the cleaners, and maybe one or two airport employees.

It could have been worse...like the Pittsburgh airport, or something. Hartsfield is actually one of the nicer airports in the US.

Yes,Hartsfield is nice as airports go. I was saying to my mother that thank God it was a US airport, and not some third-world place. I would have been terrified!!!

I haven't seen it, though I do want to. I love watching Tom Hanks. Maybe if Mickaholic had seen it before her ordeal, she would have gotten some ideas of ways to pass the time while she was there! :)

Yes, be grateful Alma. You haven't lived until you've been stranded in the Airport in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on New's Years Eve. Still, the goats wondering through at odd hours were a nice touch... Glad you made it home safely!

Yep, goats, chickens, Maranga music blaring - these people really know how to celebrate New Year's eve. We were stranded there due to an"electrical misfunction". For 10 hours, one room, no chairs, a concrete floor to sit on and EVERBODY smoking. Finally, we could stand it no longer, and went to a part of the airport where it was open air (just a roof) and backed onto a farmer's field. Wildlife abounded! Both the four legged and two legged kind!

Re: My overnight Odyssey in Hartsfield International Airport

Welcome home to DC Alma. That must have been dredful. I just had a image of you sitting at the airport with all those different varieties of clothing on and you must have been just beside yourself. Nothing like an airport delay to muss up a great trip. Sorry to hear of the experience and glad you are home safe and sound.
