Lovebugs

I'm not sure where this comment should go, so I'll try here. Before I put together our full trip report, I just wanted to note the lovebug infestation that's going on down there now.

Okay, so I'm just a city-guy from up North, but last week was my first experience with a love-bug infestation. These things were swarming everywhere.

Apparently it happens in May and September, and it was so annoying that I'm definitely going to take it into consideration in planning future trips.

From what I've read about them since returning, it sounds like the parks and many areas in the resorts are perfect locations to attract these bugs.

They really spooked our 3-year-olds out, and even made them afraid to ride in the stroller after having enough of them land on them while riding. The seats on the trams out of Animal Kingdom were covered with them. I understand it was a real nuisance for those lying around the pools.

They don't bite or sting, but they have no qualms about landing on you (they're a little too busy with the "love" part of being a love-bug to notice where they're flying) and don't respond to they typical "shoo-ing" that'll get rid of a fly.

Up here we have the Japanese beetles in October (think MUTANT lady bugs). These guys swarm by the thousands. They stink, and they bite.

I love the Love Bug (Herbie, that is), but I don't think I could become accustomed to these kind of love bugs. I'm so glad we don't have these little buggers up north!

Lovebugs are just a part of life in the South. You get used to them. I have no problems with them, except when they all get smashed on my car and I have to wash it every 4 hours.

I was sure glad we decided against driving down and flew down and rented a car. Leave the car-washing to Alamo!

Our first two trips to WDW were in September, so when we went the third time in January, both DS's were highly disappointed not to see the "love bugs." Although, it sounds like they have multiplied since our last trip in September, because I don't remember them being that bad.

UGH.....what exactly do these LoveBugs look like????? How HUGE are they? We definitely don't have anything like that here in New York!!

I was there last week as well, they were everywhere. That was the first time I remember seeing them, we didn't see them when we were there last September. I was told they sprayed for them on Thursday of last week, and on Friday, it was better, but not a ton. We had a great lagoon view room at the Yacht Club, we couldn't open our door to get on the balcony without getting a bunch in the room.

Lovebugs are rather small. But there are two of them connected. And they will land on just about anything. Picture Link

Here is an image for you. One guy tried to convince me (non-Disney employee) that Disney had developed them a few years ago to take care of mosquitos, and it didn't work. Problem is, they have been in the South since the 40s, so that isn't very likely, unless Walt was messing around with a home chemistry kit as a child.

They have been really bad the past few weeks. We had no swarms in the Spring or fall 05, so they must be making up for lost mating.

OMG....... I would have flipped. Not to mention that DS and DD probably would not have left the room if they saw a swarm of those....... They both freak if a tiny little spider is in their room. Daddy has to come kill it before they will go back in their rooms.

Another good reason to love Jan. Disney trips.
