The Good, the Bad, the Hospital??????
Cast of Characters
Myself - Kevin DW - Kristina DD10 - Grace DD8 - Claire DS8 - Ben DD3 - Susannah DW and I love the Christmas Season. I think I never outgrew the feeling you get from this time of year. Every night I anxiously sit with the kids and watch the 25 Days of Christmas on the ABC Family Channel. Last year we experienced a new Holiday high when we stayed at the VWL for a few nights as an early Christmas present. We loved it so much that we decided to make it a new Family tradition. So we have been excited for this trip for a while. Of course for weeks the kids have been counting down the days until our Second Annual early Christmas Vacation to the Villas of Wilderness Lodge. I had everything laid out on the Dining room table for packing for at least 2 days. On Sunday Afternoon I packed up most of the items, and the we headed to our Church to see our kids perform in the Holiday show. We go to a small Bible Church and they allow the kids to sing and play instruments along with a small play and a chorus. Our youngest Susannah (3) was in a wee choir that was just adorable. Anyway after getting home we all settled down and attempted to sleep. Monday 12/11 Everyone is up early but we our plan is to take it easy and leave around 10 am. I pack the van and we are soon off. We have friends that are staying at the Campgrounds at the same time we are there so we stop by there house to make arrangements to meet up in EPCOT around 3 to get in the Standby line for the Candlelight Processional. So we are soon on the road and heading towards Orlando. The drive is pretty uneventful and we are soon driving up through the Magic Kingdom gates to take the road to the Wilderness Lodge. It is only about 11:30 so we do not hold out much hope of our room being ready but we check in anyway. Being a DVC member we get free Valet parking so we gather our park items and I make arrangements to check our bags and Valet our Van. As we are gathering our stuff DW and I decide to leave our video camera in it's case in one of our large bags. More on this later..... So we walk into the Lodge and are immediately taken by the huge Christmas tree. Although it is not cold we love being in a Lodge during the Holidays. So I check in and get out callback info and we head on towards the bus stop for EPCOT. After about a 15 minute wait our bus finally pulls in. We load up and are soon on our way. I forgot to mention that we had a 1:10 ADR at Le Cellier and we planned to head straight there. We go to have to go through one bag check then get in line at Guest Services to get our Susannah's Seasonal Pass. She just turned 3 so now she is not free anymore. Bummer. We go through another bag check at the gate and are soon inside. We stop off to take a few pictures by the Holiday topiaries and are soon off towards the World Showcase and Canada for lunch. We arrive at 12:45 and put in our name. The kids go over the Kidcot station and make a mask then go see the Canadian Santa. Around 1:10 our name is called and we are seated. Kristina and Grace share a Crab & Salmon appetizer and a cup of Cheese soup while myself and the other kids had the wonderful bread that they offer. As for our Lunch order, Claire and Susannah - kids hotdog. Ben - kids Pasta & Sauce. Grace - Calgary Barbeque Sliced Prime Rib sandwich. Kristina - Beef tenderloin salad. Myself - after much debate decided on the Grilled Petite Fillet over mashed potatoes. We had some more wonderful bread ,then our lunch came. Everyone was hungry so you can imagine my surprise when I saw the server bring my bowl/plate which was about 15 inches around, with a 4 inch piece of meat in the very center. I mean where's the beef????? I kept joking with Kristina that I needed a to go box because I didn't think I could finish it. It was pretty good but the saving grace was Grace only eating half of her sandwich and dear old Dad took care of the rest. It was very good. So we were through and walked over to Great Britain and stopped to see if the were any characters in the back. It started to rain a little and we managed to get a couple of quick pictures with Father Christmas. Then we headed to the American Adventure and Kristina and Grace got in line. It was about 3:15 and the first show was at 5:00. I took the twins and Susannah on a little walk over to Italy and Germany and soon came back and got in line with Kristina. Soon after we met up with our friend, Zoie, and her 2 daughters, Rochelle, (10) and Johanna (4). The father, Ron, was setting up their camper in the campgrounds and would meet us after the show. About 4:45 we were finally let in and had pretty good seats except that Zoie got put behind one of the thin trees in the courtyard seating. The music started and the singers sang and soon Steven Curtis Chapman came out and read the Greatest Story ever told. It was wonderful. I am so glad that saw this show. One interesting note is that they must have carried out 3 or 4 singers who fainted, I guess. After the show we were supposed to meet up with Ron in front of the Funnel Cake booth. We waited and waited and waited and decided on a Funnel cake and a turkey leg to bide us over for dinner. We finally met up with Ron and he and I went to walk their dog a the kennel and we would meet up with everyone else at MGM. It was EMH at MGM. We got there after 8:00 and got in line for our wrist bands. We went on the Great Movie Ride then headed to see the Osborne Family Lights. They were spectacular. Next we saw the Muppets in 3D then headed over to ride Tower of Terror and Rock N Roller Coaster. It was about 10:45 and we were tired. So we headed out. We took the bus back to VWL and our friends drove. We found our 1 bedroom Villa and I called Bell services and they delivered all of our luggage.........or at least I thought that they did!!!! We had a little rain, a little beef, and it was not as cool as I would have hoped. All in all a good day. |

Re: The Good, the Bad, the Hospital??????
Tuesday 12/12
We got up early and the kids watched TV while Kristina went to the General store for a few supplies. I started organizing our gear and noticed that I couldn't find our video camera. When Kristina got back I asked her and she and I searched. No camera. I thought that maybe it was left in the van and since our plan for the day was to drive to DTD I would just wait until we go down and get the car from Valet. Kristina made us bacon and eggs. Great breakfast. We checked out our view and it was very nice. We were on the 3rd floor (3507) with a partially blocked view of the DVC pool and lake. If you have ever been to WL there are pine trees all over that block the view. Anyway we soon were off to get our van. When it brought to us I searched everywhere but still no camera. I saw the man that helped us the day before and he and I checked the baggage storage area. He said he remembered putting it the cart but that was it. Well after searching everywhere, I went inside to put in a lost & found claim. I was a little upset because the CM was talking like if we find it we will send it to you if not our loss. I kept on stressing that it was not us who lost it. It was a Disney employee. Finally the CM said to give them a couple of days to look and we can file another kind of claim with Disney Home Office. So we loaded up in the van and were off to DTD. I told Kristina how mad I was but I wasn't going to let it bother our day. We were soon at DTD and parked right in front of the World of Disney. We walked around and only really saw a few of the rooms. Mostly the Pirates and Princess Rooms. Of course Susannah just knew she was getting a makeover, but it was not to be. At least not this time. We made our way out and there was a booth set up with none other than jolly old Saint Nick so we got in line. The line moved fast but Susannah was in one of her moods so she refused to see Santa. The other 3 happily jumped up on his lap and we got a nice photo. Next Ben had to go into the Lego store. This is his Mecca. He looked and looked and this time seemed interested in the Batman stuff. Usually we cannot peel him away from the Star Wars stuff but it was all too large and expensive for this trip. I took the kids outside and Kristina bought Ben some Batman sets. He will be surprised. Now it was after 12 and we were getting hungry so we decided to go to the Earl of Sandwich but it was packed. So we just went into the Christmas store and Kristina got in line to buy a few gifts. We decided to try Raglan Road for lunch so I took the kids with me and we walked to Pleasure Island as it started to rain. We ran up and it was closed. I called Kristina and told her I would get the van and pick her up. We then decided to drive East and see what we could find to eat. There is a shopping Center called the Crossroads that had a few places so we stopped in there. We were thinking of Red Lobster but Kristina noticed Buffalo Wild Wings and we had talked about going to one back home so we figured why not? It was pretty empty and loud but it was a Sports Bar. The food was pretty good and that is all that counts. We then drove back to VWL. Kristina had mentioned to me that there was a Christmas Party being thrown that night for the ladies in her Bible study group in Plant City which is between our home in Brandon and Disney. It was about a 40 minute drive so I told her to go ahead and the kids and I would swim and rent a DVD. It was around 4 and it was overcast but the temp was in the 70's so we went to swim. I stayed with Susannah in the pool and found that the jets were all warm water so I parked near a few and played with her while the other kids hit the slide. I traded off with Grace and road the slide once. It was fun but the air was getting too cool for me so I stayed in the water. Kristina came by and said she would see us later and she was off. Susannah and I swam for an hour then I changed her and wrapped her in some towels and she was soon asleep on the lounge chair. I let the older kids swim for another hour then we headed up to our room to change and watch Brother Bear 2. DVC members get free rental of DVD's so this was a no brainer. I made sandwiches and opened a bag of chips and some fruit and we had a nice meal while watching the move. After the movie I found the ABC Family Channel and we watched a Christmas show, and soon the kids were all asleep. The older 3 kids slept it the living area and Susannah slept in the King Size bed with Kristina and I. I watched some TV then Kristina made it back late after having a little adventure with trying to get gas on the way home. We talked for a while then were soon off to sleep. Little did we know the FUN was about to begin................................ |

Re: The Good, the Bad, the Hospital??????
Wednesday 12/13
The plan for Wednesday was to meet our friends at AK for the day. They would come back to our Villa for dinner then we were all going to go to the River Roost at POR to see Piano Bob. But early in the morning, I was awoken by a moaning sound. I walked out to find Grace complaining of an upset stomach. I gave her a couple of Tums and she fell back to sleep. We all got up early and had a quick breakfast. Grace was still complaining of an upset stomach so after getting dressed Kristina said she would stay with Grace until she felt better and the rest of us would go to AK. We had our cell phones so we could meet up later. We figured Grace had an upset stomach because my other two daughters had stomach issues that week as well. Anyway I loaded up the other 3 and we were soon on a bus to AK. We made it in the gate with no issues and were soon in front of EE where we were supposed to meet up. I grabbed Fast Passes even though the line stated 20 minutes. Our friends soon showed up and we took turns watching the young ones and riding EE. It was there first time and they loved it. Next we decide to check out the new Nemo and Friends show in the old Tarzan theatre. As we waited it started to rain lightly. This would become a pattern for most of the week. While in line Kristina called me and said Grace was not getting any better and that she was going to go to the doctor. She called our insurance company and ended up going to the Hospital in Celebration. Of course I was worried but she said to just stay was we were and she would update me ASAP. The doors soon opened to the show and we saw the most amazing and fun show that I have seen in a long time. We had great seats by the stage and the show was just great. I highly recommend it to anyone who has not seen it. After the show we decided to go to Dinoland and see the sights. I grabbed everyone's tickets and trekked to get Fast Passes for the Safari for later. I made it back and met the others in the Boneyard to let the kids burn off some steam. While there Kristina called me and said the initial diagnosis was that Grace needed to have an appendectomy. WHAT?? She's only 10!!!!! They were going to give her an Ultrasound to check. After that if needed they would give her a Catscan to be sure. They still were not sure but would let us know after the tests. It would be about 2 hours before the catscan so I waited patiently by the cell phone. After the Boneyard everyone was hungry so we stopped to get Chicken wings and Turkey legs. We found a seat in a sheltered area and ate. Of course Susannah slept the whole time. After lunch we decided to head towards Africa and the safari. The safari is a great ride and the kids loved it. When we got off they were setting up the ropes for the parade so we found a spot and the kids had ice cream while we waited. This was the first parade we had ever seen at AK and it was fun. After the parade Kristina called me again and said it was positive and they were transferring Grace to the Florida Hospital on the other side of Downtown Orlando. The two of them were about to get in a ambulance for the trip. She gave the phone to Grace and when she said "I love you Daddy" I teared up. I told her to be brave and everything would work out fine. Kristina said she would call me after they got to the new Hospital to tell me the details. Of course now being a bundle of nerves, I was trying to hold it together for the sake of the other kids. They always gauge things by how Dad reacts. Anyway we decided to ride the River Rapids then head out. There was absolutely no line so while I watched Susannah the others rode the rapids 3 times. Then we headed to the bus. Our friends were still coming back with me then Ron would give me a ride to the Celebration Hospital to pick up my Van then he would go back and watch the kids with Zoie while I drove to the new Hospital. After a bus, boat and bus, ride Ron and I got to their campsite to pick up there car and soon we at Celebration. I called Kristina and got directions and around 7:15 made it to the Florida Hospital. I found the Emergency surgery area and was led to Grace and Kristina in the Prep area. Grace had a curtained off area with a little TV. I gave them both a big hug and kiss and we settled down to wait. They said that they would come by around 9 to get Grace. So we sat there and watched the Biggest Loser Finale. While waiting the girl next door who was about Grace's age had to be given an IV and she totally freaked out yelling and fighting. I know it is scary but I was mostly worried about Grace but Kristina told me Grace was a real trooper when they gave her the IV. So we waited and about 9:45 they finally came for Grace. We all walked up to the operating area and at 10:15 they took Grace in and Kristina and I went to the cafeteria to get a bite to eat. Then we went to the waiting room where we were supposed to see someone by 11:00 but it at 11:30 when the doctor finally came in and said Grace was fine and would be brought to a room around midnight. Kristina would meet her there and spend the night. I brought a few items for her and Grace for the night with me so she was prepared. I reluctantly agreed to go back to our Villa to relieve our friends but I knew I had to watch the other kids. I made it back around midnight and our friends left. I offered to let them stay but there really wasn't enough room. I told them I would talk to them the next day. I called Kristina and she said Grace just made it to the room and that she would call me in the morning. Not the best day that we ever spent at WDW but with the Lords help we made it through. We were blessed that we had Friends there when we needed them. Kristina was amazingly calm and had a very long trying day. I thank the Lord daily for putting her in my life. And Grace, bless her heart, was a real trooper. |

Re: The Good, the Bad, the Hospital??????
Thursday 12/14
We all get up early and have a quick bite to eat. I explain to the kids what happened to Grace and I am proud to say they were all very concerned. You know how brothers and sisters can be, especially kids. So I put on the TV and start to gather up our backpack. Kristina calls me and tells me that Grace is doing fine and that there was a slim chance that she could leave that day but the nurses were saying Friday. If Grace were able to walk, eat and go to the bathroom she might be able to leave that day. Anyway she tells me to go ahead and take the kids to a park for the day. So we all get dressed and it is off to MK. On the way do the bus station I stop in the Lodge to go see Guest Services about my lost camera. They still have not seen any cameras. I ask to speak to a manager who gives me a different claim form and says that if there are no results by the next day he would contact Disney Home office or rather he would give me the information to contact them. So feeling a little dejected, I gather the kids and we are off to the Magic Kingdom. I love the Magic Kingdom. It is my favorite park. It's like getting back to the roots of Disney for me. Anyway we decide to take the boat from the Wilderness Lodge to the MK and are soon docking at the main entrance to the Magic Kingdom. The line is a little longer than I expected to get in but we are soon walking through the train station and seeing Main Street. The lines for the characters were especially long but Susannah wanted to see Cinderella, her favorite. So I decided that we would head to ToonTown first to see the characters. Being that it was just me, my 8 year old twins and my 3 year old the ride options were limited to only ones we could all go on. This is where it is a blessing that we live so close by and can come as often as we do. We don't feel like we have to ride everything to have a good time. So we make the trek back to ToonTown and went right in to the Judges Tent. We went right for the Princesses line which said that it had a 30 minute wait. It was more like 45 minutes but we finally made it in to see Snow White, Cinderella and Belle. The kids were so cute. When they were talking to Belle, Ben told her that his sister Grace was in the Hospital and that Belle was her favorite. Belle said a special greeting for Grace and Ben gave her a big hug. Not sure if that was for Grace or himself?!?!? Next we were off to see Minnie's House. Then we went to see Mickey's house and got in line to see the Great one himself. The line moved fast and then we were face to face with Mickey Mouse. When we got out the twins wanted to ride the Barnstormer so I waited with Susannah while they took there ride. All that morning my cell phone rang constantly from friends and family who had found out about Grace. I was thinking of her all of the time but I wanted to try and make the day fun for the others so we kept on and headed to FantasyLand. I stopped to get Fast Passes for Pooh and we walked down and rode Small World. The kids were hungry so we headed to FrontierLand for Pecos Bill's but the new kids menu didn't make anyone happy so I decide to go back to the Columbia Harbour house and we all shared Chicken Strips and French Fries. We took our time and relaxed a little, I talked to my Mom and soon we were off again. The skies started to darken so we went to go ride Pooh and just as we got there the rain came. I put a poncho on our stroller and we got in the Fast Pass return line and were soon blowing and floating and bouncing through the 100 Acre Woods with Pooh and Friends. This is a big favorite of my kids. When we got off the rain was still coming down so we waited in the gift shop for about 20 minutes and the rains suddenly stopped. We uncovered the stroller and it was dry so Susannah hopped in and we headed off to TomorrowLand. We rode the TomorrowLand Transit Authority and then went in to see the Carousel of Progress. We decided to get an Ice cream treat which was a messy event then headed towards Main Street and caught the new parade. I really miss the parade from a couple of years ago when they would stop and allow kids to dance around with the characters. My kids really loved the interaction but now they can only hope that one will walk to the edge and wave or shake hands with them. After the parade Claire wanted to go look inside TinkerBelle's Treasures and then we decided to go back to Main Street and go see the Town Square Exposition Hall. My kids love the little cinema and the character cutouts. We made it there but the area was curtained off and closed. This was surprising. I then got a call from Kristina telling me that Grace was doing very well and that they were waiting on a visit from the doctor who might release them. She said she would call me as soon as something happens. So we decided to head into the shops to look around a little. The twins had to make a pit stop and when Claire came out of the bathroom she was accompanied by our friend Zoie and her youngest Johanna. We didn't think we would meet up but it was nice to talk to them for a few minutes. I gave her the lowdown on Grace. She is such a good friend to us and it was such a blessing to have her and her family the day before to make things easier on us. I don't know what I would have done if we were alone. Anyway she says they were going to see a few sites and asked us to join her but I wanted to stay near the front in case I got the call. A few minutes after they walked away I got the call from Kristina that they could go but it was about 5:00 and she said I should try to get there around 7 so I could get the kids fed before we braved the traffic through Orlando. She said that I should try to get a breakfast reservation for Whispering Canyon and try and get the DVD, High School Musical, for Grace to watch that night. So we hopped on the boat to the Wilderness Lodge and hit the General Store. As luck would have it I got the requested DVD and we were soon in out room and I fed the kids. I called down and got the breakfast reservation and we freshened up and were off. When we came back down to get to the van the rains started coming down again. I got everyone into the van without getting soaked and we then were off to brave I-4 Eastbound into Orlando. Let me just say that the rains really started to come down and the traffic was at best a crawl. It took me at least 45 minutes but we were eventually through Orlando. I called Kristina to tell her that we were almost there. She would get Grace down to the entrance for me to pick them up. The Hospital entrance was a mess. It was a round-about with only a small covered portion and it was raining pretty good. I made 3 passes through before I finally saw Kristina and Grace and I soon had my two girls back. The ride back was much smoother and I dropped off the family by the front door and Kristina went and got a wheelchair. I parked the van and met the others inside the main Lodge. We then went up to our room and finally settled down a little. Kristina and I started packing up our belongings and I carried all of the smaller items down to the van and made it back to watch the DVD with the kids. I let Grace sleep in the King Size bed and I slept on an air mattress. I can sleep e=anywhere on anything so it was not a problem for me. We managed to make the best of the day at MK even though we really didn't go on that many rides/attractions. It was great to have my girls back. Tomorrow was our last day and we didn't know what we would be able to do. |

Re: The Good, the Bad, the Hospital??????
Friday 12/15
The plan for today was to take it easy and see how Grace was feeling. She said she felt pretty good so we decided to go to EPCOT with Grace in her wheel chair. I called Bell services who came and stored the big bags that we had and we were off to Whispering Canyons for breakfast. We decided to make this a big meal and try and snack for lunch then get a dinner somewhere in the World Showcase. After returning the DVD in the general Store we went over to wait for our ADR. We were seated in no time at all. I decided on the skillet breakfast, I am not sure what Kristina decided on and the kids got pancakes. The meal was good and the kids got to interact with our waitress who was from England and very nice. After breakfast I went over to Guest Services for a last ditch effort to find our Video camera. I explained the situation again and told the CM that the manager who was a few seats down told me to check back. She went into the back and after 10 minutes came back with OUR CAMERA. Kristina was in tears and I almost cried myself for joy. The week hadn't been the best but things were looking up. The CM seemed very touched by our showing of emotion and had a tear in her eye as well. The only explanation I got was that it turned up. Not wanting to push it we just composed ourselves and headed for the boat to the CR to jump on the monorail. We decided to go to the Grand Floridian to see the Gingerbread house. It always amazes me. Then we were back on the monorail to the T&TC to catch another monorail to EPCOT. The wait was minimal and we were soon at the gates to EPCOT. We were soon in and took a few pictures then headed to get Fast Passes for Soarin. I went get the tickets while the rest of the family waited in Innoventions. They love to play the games. As soon as I got back we decided to go ride the new Nemo ride. I loved the seagulls out front saying Mine, Mine, Mine. This was to become Susannah's new catch phrase for the day. Oh well. The line was not bad and we were soon in our clam mobiles and watching Nemo get lost then found. I thought it was really nice but as others have mentioned a little short. Then we took a few pictures with Bruce eating each of us and headed out and over to the Wonders of Life pavilion. We haven't been in there for years. We checked out "Cranium Command" and the "Making of me" and a few hands on attraction sand then it was time for our Fast Passes to Soarin. I decided to stay with Ben and Susannah and the girls would ride it twice and we would all meet up in Norway. Along the way, Ben, Susannah and myself stopped for a quick drink at Club Cool. I couldn't believe that they actually had a full compliment of drinks. I tried all of them except for the Beverly. After we drank our fill we headed to Norway and were lucky enough to find a bench to wait for the others. I brought some trail mix with us so we just snacked and waited. It wasn't long before the girls showed up. For some reason they only rode Soaring once?!?!?! We went over to the little platform where they do the little show about Christmas in that country. The Norway version is about a little elf who was invisible and mischievous. He played pranks on the narrator as she spoke. He kept ringing a bell and picked an innocent bystander, in this case my son Ben, who was he gave the bell to. He also made Ben dance with the girl. It was fun. Next we headed to Germany to shop a little. Grace was holding up great. Next we stopped in Italy for the Christmas telling and then headed to the American Adventure. Susannah fell asleep in her stroller so she, Grace and I stayed outside while Kristina and the twins went in to the show. When they came out we all checked out the Gingerbread house inside the food area. Kristina and I talked it over and decided to go out the International Gateway exit and try and eat at Beaches & Cream. We put or names in and after about a 40 minute wait we were seated and had a great burger and some ice cream. We love Beaches & Cream and try and go there at least once during our trips. After dinner we went in to the Beach Club to see the Christmas decorations. It was a carousel with 7 hidden Mickeys. Next we walked around the lake to the Boardwalk Inn and checked out it's Christmas display. It had a big Mickey & Minnie and a display inside a house. These were both amazing. It was getting late so we got on the bus in front of the Boardwalk to MK. We were going to get the boat back to WL but the bus was right there so we hopped on it. We were the only ones leaving the MK since it was MVMCP that night. Grace rode up the Wheel chair ramp and was strapped in and we were soon back to the VWL. Kristina stopped in the store and the rest of us rested on the sofas and I took in the atmosphere for the last time. We headed outside and went to get the van. I pulled it up to the side, got our luggage out of storage, then loaded up the van, inside and out and we were soon off. This was the not best trip we have ever been on but it just might be the most memorable. The different levels of emotion we experienced throughout the week was draining. At least I know Kristina and myself were drained. We are already thinking of a short makeup trip in the near future since Grace and Kristina missed out on 2 days of our trip. Loved VWL. The CM's throughout the week were very friendly but some of the guests were pretty rude. So much for Christmas spirit!?!?!?! We were so blessed to have our friends available to help out in our time of need. And finally the decorations were amazing. I can't imagine a better time of year to go and I know we will be making this annual pilgrimage for years to come. Just to update you on Grace, she is showing no effects of her surgery and doing great. |

Oh my! I'm so sorry your little one was hospitalized! I'm glad it all turned out as well as it did.
What a memorable trip. Mostly for the wrong reasons. You sure do have a great outlook on it.
