Re: Ok for kids?
I can't answer your questions, but I don't think you're at all an overprotective mom! Internet stalking and pedophilia is a very real danger and I think your concern is merited and should be the standard for parents today.
I haven't joined the VMK site personally because there are very few websites I trust to have my personal information. I also don't like to download anything if I don't have to, because, these days, there always seems to be something "unsavory" attached to everything! Well done, you, for asking these questions. Your son is a lucky kid to have a mom like you!

Re: Ok for kids?
Being a mom myself, I joined VMK with my dd and I play with her and thy are very excellent about monitoring the site. Nothing objectionable is allowed to be posted it comes up as ***. THey take very minimal info from kids and they send a email to parents letting them know that their child has joined. I am just a careful with my dd, but I found that to extra vigilant with her and for us to have fun together, we do it as a team. We help each other with quests and her friends like to talk to me as well. We are all buddies and it is great. There are a lot of DCers who are VMK members, and you can do quests at MK now, and get stuff for your VMK account. I find that to be very interesting. My dd, several of her friend and I are all on runescape together and they come to my house to play and I monitor what they do and we follow each other around and do quests and sell stuff, and really leave everyone else alone. We have fun in that world without letting the other people bother or intrude on us. I found a way to monitor my child and be interactive with her and her friends at the same time. Seeing as she is now 12, I thought that this was important. At this age, keeping the lines of communication open is so important.

Re: Ok for kids?
I'll ease your pain a little bit..
I think that Disney put 'blockers' on so you cannot type anything that even LOOKS questionable....for example you cant even type 'don't' for 'name'.....so giving out names and address..would be darn near impossible!

Re: Ok for kids?
I have seen no issue with VMK. It is virtually impossible to type anything but general comments on there. You cant even type numbers, but you can have fun playing pirates.
If my child were old enough to play on the computer I would let her on VMK.

Re: Ok for kids?
VMK is designed for kids. Us older Disney fans are not the norm there and Disney has many restrictions and Moderators keeping a strict eye on things. You have nothing to worry about. Even the hours of play are restricted so kids don't stay up through the night.

Re: Ok for kids?
Nah, I don't think there's really anything to worry about on VMK. Believe me--I'm an obsessee. They have a dictionary of good words, so no bad words can get in, not even with dots. The downside of this is that they have missed a lot of useful words like "two" and etc. The only thing about VMK that I would say is not good for kids is online boyfriends and girlfriends. You definitely can not say your phone number, address, state of residence...etc, but it's all the rage to have an online bf/gf. I don't see it as dangerous, but everyone thinks differently. All in all, VMK was designed to be a safe place for kids to surf, and I think it's perfect.

Re: Ok for kids?
Kids are really safe on this site! And after you DS lerns the ins and outs, have him post on DC some of his secrets so we can all get better! Haha... the kids always do better than the adults!

Your kids hear worse in school than they do on VMK. Guarenteed. Actually, they probably hear worse from their teachers.

Re: Ok for kids?
They all do this in every virtual reality world. I am on VMK with lil brer and have advised her to just ignore it. What can they do? they can't see you and they don't really know you? Ignore it and them and go on your way. Have fun and enjoy your day in VMK. I think that paying attention to it is making a bigger deal out it than needs be.
