Airline shopping expert in the house?

I am desperately trying to find a decent airline price. I have checked Spirit out of Atlantic City and everything except for Southwest (not booking my dates yet) out of Philly. The cheapest I come up with for my trip dates is $181 a ticket. Southwest is currently offering $49 one way to Orlando from Philly but only booking up to August. I am getting nervous about the airfare. I am almost considering driving to WDW at this point. I also thought about the name your own price on Priceline, but hate not knowing what time I will fly in and out. If anyone has ANY suggestions on getting cheap tickets, please help. Keep in mind that I am limited as to what airlines I can use. The only nonstops out of Philly are USairs, United and Southwest. EVerything else has layovers and cost more for some stupid reason. Thanks in advance.

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

What are your dates? Are they a popular travel time? Thanksgiving? Christmas? School vacation? If so, you may want to book that $181 RT ticket because the prices will only get higher, not lower. If your dates are not peak, you can wait and keep checking for lower prices. For one thing, you know that when SW begins to allow ticketing, you will be able to get a relatively inexpensive fare with them (as long as you jump on it as soon as they open your dates.)

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

My dates are 10/31 until 11/2. I have tried altering the dates a day or so....nothing. I am going to wait till Southwest opens the date window and hope the rates are what I want. Thanks for resonding.

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

We are thinking about flying this summer. Southweat opened my dates and the rate isn't that good. I was trying to get my tickets for under $200 each, however, SWA is $234 round trip right now. Does this usually drop as the date gets closer? In the past we have gotten round trip tickets for as low as $125--are low rates a thing of the past?

The cheapest I could come up with in January was $181 too, so it's not promising to find a deal. Right now Southwest is offering $49 each way to Orlando for me, but I have a feeling that rate is going to be different for October. Southwest in January was more money that $181 a ticket for me. Low rates are really hard to come by. I am SO close to driving....and I hate driving long. If I see anything Steph, I'll report back to this thread. I'm going to be searching high and low...bank on it.

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

Dana, sign up for DING on Southwest.com....you can get some really good fares there from what I have read. Someone just got tickets from PVD to MCO for $60 (each way) using the DING notification. Wow! RT for $120 plus tax....that's really good! You should be able to get that good out of Philly or better in October.

Southwest should be extending their schedule soon. They've been booking through August for over a month and a half....you shouldn't have to wait much longer I wouldn't think.

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

Dana, I think $181 is a good deal, but I will take a look. Think about it this way, I am paying $220 out of Salisbury here, that is basically for 4 flights roundtrip. I will take a look, and post back.

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

Thanks for the DING tip--I just signed up. We usually fly out of St. Louis but Chicago isn't out of the question, just not the easiest option.

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

Dana, at a brief glance 181 looks good, however the Southwest thing could be lower. I would just keep a VERY close watch on Southwest, and the minute they post their fares, check to see wat US Airways does.

OK time for DG to put down Independence air. They go around claiming to be a low fare airline, but they SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO aren't. I have never seen a low fare with them.

Anywho, I will say that they gave some good routes, especially out of some large to mid size cities.

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

I'm still waiting to book my Aug trip,Dana. Southwest only is booking until Aug 3. Last year I got $98 RT from Philly and got the same rate this Jan. I hope to do the same this year but it doesn't look as promising. Plus the discounts just released arent as generous either. I got POR for $79 in Jan, and last Aug. Now they released it for $109. What's up with that??? I am reluctant to try US air because of all the recent problems.

I have used Southwest once and got good prices, but what is important and I swear by this, you have to get your tired butt up and be ready to go a few minutes past midnight. A certain amount of cheap tickets are there for the taking (I don't know how they work it) And I already did this with Song Airlines. They let you book 331 days out, longer than most I think. I called them a couple of times to verify when my dates would be open, got my lazy butt out of bed and waited a few minutes. I did our departure flight first then had to wait a few more days for Arrival. Ended up getting seats that I picked, non-stop for $69.00 a piece with tax it will be $150.00 per round trip. I check daily justto see whats up and all my dates Dec 23 and January 3 are both now $249.00 one way! My theory may be wrong, about doing it a few minutes after midnight, I have done it four times now and I have had the same luck. You people with less options are at a disadvantage, good luck with you airfare

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

We flew last November and did not buy tickets until August. Even then the week after I bought mine there was a sale. Maybe things are changing but I always thought Fall was an off time and there are more deals to be had the closer you get. If you are that close to driving then why not wait it out? I don't think 181 sounds that bad, though.

Re: Airline shopping expert in the house?

$181 is a decent price. It's about what we paid from DFW to MCO. Don't wait too long, though, or the price will go up :O
