Is a back pack more of a pain than a help?

Hi everyone!

Only eight more weeks to go! HURRAY!!

Everytime we have gone to WDW in the past, I have taken a fanny pack. Whenever we got on a ride, it was easy to slide it around on my waist as needed for thrill rides or whatever. This year, however, we are going with another family, so there will be six of us. The other family is also on more of a budget, so I think there will be more of a pinch for them to bring water and snacks into the park. Plus my husband always has to haul the video camera, and it would fit into the back pack also.

However, I'm thinking about some of the rides and wondering how that would work? It would be too big for Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain, Haunted Mansion and the like, definitely while on your back but I can't even imagine them fitting between your feet. Do they have a place for you to put them while you ride? As many times as I've been, I've never paid attention to how people handled it.

I'm just trying to figure out whether it's going to be more of a hindrance than a help.

Thanks in advance!
Rene'

Re: Is a back pack more of a pain than a help?

yaaaaay 8 weeks!! woohoo!!! :)

I always bring a little backpack with me, one of the drawstring kinds. Mine fits anywhere - next to me on the seat, between my feet, whatever - with plenty of room to spare. I would think a regular sized backpack would fit too... there's a lot of foot room on most rides. (about the rides you mentioned... Space Mtn might be tight, but HM and Thunder Mtn should be no problem... you could fit a lot between your feet in a 2-person seat like those) I remember hearing that you can leave your backpack on the loading place, but the CM's won't watch it for you... in other words, they don't mind you leaving it there but it's not their responsibility if something gets taken. Another suggestion is renting a locker, but it sounds like you'd want to keep the backpack with you, so that might not work.

Hope some of that helps! Have a great trip! :)

We always carry a backpack and have never had any problem taking it on rides. We can always find a place to stick it on each ride usually between us or on the floor.

I've carried one of those 1-strap backpacks, with the single thick strap that crosses your body. On the rides I either put it between my legs, slide it around to my side, or slide it all the way around to the front of my body...whichever fits best for the ride. Never had any trouble at all (of course, I will say that mine didn't have video camera in it).

I do the same. I even find the one straps easier than the two straps. Hook an arm through the strap, or a foot. I haven't had trouble fitting it on any ride. Since we don't have kids, we have little use for the video camera, so it stays in a locker until time for fireworks and parades. But I can easily fit small snacks, personal items, digital camera, etc without it being awkward.

Re: Is a back pack more of a pain than a help?

My DH will take a back pack anywhere. I don't ever see him struggling to put it somewhere. It's second nature to him. The Doombuggies at HM are large enough to put one on the floor between your feet, same on Splash Mountain, there's enough space. And on some of the rides that I won't go on, like Space Mountain, I hold on to it.
Works for us. I love having him shlepp things around for me.

Re: Is a back pack more of a pain than a help?

I always bring a drawstring backpack like PJ. I only carry around a small camera, a couple of ziploc bags (for pal mickey on water rides), a water bottle, and my wallet, but there's always room on the rides to store it somewhere. On roller coasters and really fast rides, I put it between my feet and wrap one of the strings around my ankle so it can't fly out of the ride.

I would be lost without my backpack. I really never notice it, to be honest. I just get used to carrying it. I usually put it at my feet on the rides.

I allways bring a backpack. I keep all my stuff in it, extra clothes for DD, sun block, my extra glasses, and snacks if needed. I have never had a hard time taking it any where. I really liked it on Soarin and Dinosaur where they have special places to put them.

I know fanny packs are considered dorky by some but they are handy and less of a burden than backpacks.

Forgot to say I have an old one that's really fat (okay I'm not describing DW ) and I carry it more often with the strap over my shoulder than around my waist. Just right for camera, film, sunglasses, etc.

Re: Is a back pack more of a pain than a help?

I prefer to use the waist pack. I like to tour simple with only a few things on me. If I intend to spend the entire day at a park with no breaks, I bring a tote bag with extra things I may need and get a locker. I wish I could get it down to nothing to carry I have found that the bigger the bag I have the more I end up carrying for my DD. WE each get a wasit pack and if it doesn't fit in there, we don't get it....works for me. With all that you have to carry (the video camera etc), you will be better off with a back pack. Make your DH carry it..lol

Your exactly right, Dana. Bigger bags encourage you to carry more and I'm getting a little to old and slow to carry too much all day in July

AMEN to that. Not to the your old part, but to the carrying all that stuff. I'd rather people think I'm dorky with a waist pack....Us dorks aren't strapped down like a pack mule.
