Digital or Film?
How many of you are using film or digital?
I have a Canon Elan IIe that I dearly love w/28-300mm lens which is the perfect lens for capturing all shots near & far. However, we've been looking at going digital and since I'm so spoiled by the SLR lens I just can't give it up. I know there is a new Canon digital w/6 megapixels that you can use your SLR lenes on but it is $999 and that is just a little pricey right now. Our DD mentioned the other day that she would like a digital camera as some of her friends are getting them. She is nearly 13 and very responsible for her age. But I really don't want to spend a large amount of money on a camera for her. What digital camera's does anyone out there use? Any good recommendations? Thanks! ![]() |

I went digital about three years ago with an Olympus D360-L and love it, my only regret is not having an optical zoom. As you are already aware the digital and SLR versions are very pricey but are coming down. I recommend that you get your DD a low end digital w/zoom, and extra memory card and let her shoot away. The biggest joy of digital is you can shoot all the pictures you want, knowing that you do not have to develop all of them. There are all kinds of low end digital cameras out their, but I would recommend some sort of optical zoom, not just digital zoom and any where 2 to 4 megapixels, some of them also shoot short video clips. As an FYI when prices on the digital/SLR are more reasonably priced and you make the jump to high end digital, note that those 6 megapixels photos are going to be huge jpg files on you computer, so you need extra storage space, for file management.
Good luck, and let us know what you do.

I too have an Olympus, it is still in the box and never used! It is 3.2 megapixels, supposedly a good camera, but it is a lot bigger than my Cannon Elph Digital. I never used it because I received the Elph digital as a gift almost 2 years ago and fell in love with it, it was so cute, I couldn't part with it. I loved it! Well, I dropped it one too many times in WDW this past August (:dazed ) and now my zoom doesn't work. Just as well, it is a 2 megapixel and I wanted better. Anyway, you can get your DD a very inexpensive KODAK digital or even a low end CANNON ELPH. Why don't you look on EBAY? There are a bunch a lot cheaper than retail on there, just make sure you are getting BRAND NEW IN PACKAGE, and not REFURBISHED.
I am by no means a digital expert, but my only experience is with my little Elph and I loved it! ;)

I have a KODAK EASYSHARE DX3600. I bought it last year and I use it more than anything else I own. I have the docking station so as soon as I'm done taking pictures I slap it in the dock and away they go. Although for our WDW trip in May I purchased an extra 2 memory cards I'm sure I'll take a ton of pictures.

My sister in law mentioned that she heard in Disney there are places you can take your memory sticks to them and they will put your photos on CD to take home. Is this true? Did anyone ever use it and how much was it?
I am considering buying a digital camera but dont want to have to buy 2 or 3 memory sticks extra.

Navywife, there is, but it is pricey. I believe it is done at the camera centers in each of the parks. I don't remember the pricing, but I do believe someone listed it on the forums here.
We bring our laptop and download each night. I use 256mb and 64mb cards - I prefer using the smaller cards as the camera takes a shorter time to recycle between shots. I no longer take my film camera, unless I know I want a specific shot or look. I use a Canon Elph s330/Ixus 330 and LOVE it too. it's ridiculously easy, very true in image quality, and best yet, it takes a beating. I love it love it love it. I wish it had a better optical zoom, but that will come with time. As for your daughter getting one, do it! We got my son one for Christmas last year, and he loves it. He prefers my Elph and is very good with it, so I let him use mine quite frequently. I also let him take it around with him - quite fun to see his life through images.

I have been using my digital for almost a year. I would never go back to film. I also had a problem with night shots on my October trip, but just because I didn't take time to make adjustments for the special conditions. My laptop follows me wherever I go, so my one little memory card works well.

Also remember when taking night shots (in addition to making the lighting adjustments) to 'squeeze' the shutter instead of stabbing at the button - yo uwill get much less camera shake.
Another member here, KeithOP recommended to me to use the self-timer or else a bean-bag or coat or something if you don't have a tripod with you.

I'm still using my Advantix system for most of my photo needs. Especially when scenic shots are a big possibility. I would never go back to plain 35mm, and its clear to me digital will be the way to go shortly as many of the digital pictures I have taken are as good as 35mm.

Another question on night shots--do you use your flash on not for like the parades and fireworks? I tried to take pictures of the castle last time when it changed colors with my digital and they did not turn out very well at all. I have since purchased a newer digital and am hoping this one will be better. Any advise????

I am a huge advocate of practicing BEFORE you go... print out the prints, too.
I normally turn off the flash for distant shots with even lighting around, but oddly enough, my camera handles better with flash on at night when the subject is 12-50 feet away, like parades. I believe the flash setting compensates for the bright lighting conditions nearby - I get better shots up close with a flash. BUT, that is my camera. Practice on yours. Also practice using a 'rapid fire' setting and deleting the shots that don't make the grade, if your camera has one. I just thought of something - head to a fairly busy shopping mall at night and practice. Something with neon lighting in it will be good practice. Make sure to park at the far end of the parking lot, both to get an accurate read, and to make sure the local security guards don't haul you off.

I'm clipping a couple of shots for you to compare - this first one is with the *flash on,* second is not. The subject is about 12 feet from me, with the Castle in the background. (the picture with the flash off was a mistake, but it's a good example of the same set-up with two different settings.)
