advice for mom of new cper

My dd will be arriving Mar 28, 2007. She would like to have a car there but we aren't crazy about driving from Ohio. She'd like to make the drive alone but there is no way - I am just not ready for that yet.

Is this feasible: we fly in, rent a car, shop for pillow, linens etc. mail down some necessities, etc??
What do others do? How bad is it not to have a car there?

Advice please!!

Thanks

The transportation here is will take you pretty much anywhere you want to go. The flip side is that it isn't always convienant. I have a car here, and I drive to work because the bus doesn't have a regular stop at my work location, but when I visit the parks I take the bus so I won't have to park, and I save on gas. The bus does go to Walmart and area grocery stores also.

Re: advice for mom of new cper

First off, congrats to your DD!

I would definitely, definitely, definitely recommend having a car while on the college program. While it is feasible to do it without a car, it can be quite depressing to not have one and be stuck to a bus schedule or begging rides off other people. Especially if you want to see more than Wal-Mart and Disney while in Florida.

Luckily I met a "special friend" early in the program and he let me take his car all the time (he wasn't a CP). Otherwise I would have gone crazy.

How long is your DD on the program for?

Re: advice for mom of new cper

In all honestly, I would try hard to allow her to bring her car. The busses do run to anywhere you need to go, but they are horribly inconvenient. Some work locations even require you to take three buses. My mom and I drove down together and then she flew home. (I'm not sure where you are in Ohio, but my mom was able to fly one-way into Cleveland for around $79 dollars) I am not saying you [i]have[i] to have a car to get by in the program, but by it is DEFINITELY more convenient. Also, for the money you will spend to ship things, you could probably by your one way ticket home. Please let me know if you have any questions about the program. (What to pack, pointers, etc.) I know there is alot to do at the beginning and it can be very overwhelming! Good luck with everything!

If you don't have a car will they give you a job that does have a bus stop at it?

I would love to know what she should bring - I suppose there is a list somewhere.

Thanks to all who replied, your advice is good. Before I wasn't even considering a car but now I am. I just have to work on her dad!

All locations do have a bus stop if that's what your asking. If she has a job at a resort, it will be tough to get around because you will have to transfer from a charter bus to a mini van. If she works at the parks, she will only have to take one bus.

You could always buy a "clunker" in FL then plan on selling it when she leaves.

I hate to say Disney doesnt care, but honestly, they dont. They have no idea or concern as to whether or not you have a car and they wont plan your work location around it. My parents werent big on my taking my car either, but I am so glad they gave in!
