Re: Working At Disney?
Wow, just wanted to say my daughter did the CP Jan. 08-May 08. She had a great experience, though she did work long hours and late into the evening. She was in Merchandise @ WOD and in BBB. It was an awesome experience - her housing was very good - at Chatham.....we visited several times and we were very impressed with the security @ Chatham. It was taken very seriously - even felt like we had to "jump through hoops" to see her, but that made me HAPPY. Her apt. was really nice. There were a couple of issues when she moved in....a broken blind, one mattress needed replacing.......but, as soon as Price Management was informed they took care of it for them. I know that Disney acted very quickly with a young man who was termed for not going to work, not informing his manager that he wasn't coming, etc. This young man didn't turn his id in and was seen near my daughter's apt. and Disney quickly had security hunt him down and remove him from the complex. She never felt unsafe or threatened. She caught bronchitis, had to see a dr., missed several days of work, but her managers were really nice to her - gave her early releases, excused absenses, and did not give her demerits. I think if those situtations are handled with the "leads", there are no problems for the CPers. I'm sure some managers and leads are easier to deal with than others so I guess I feel that my dd was blessed to have great people around her. She did get worn down by the long hours during the spring break time, but did get time off when we were there as she requested. She didn't make much money, but she had enough earnings to have a good time at Disney and Sea WOrld, etc. None of her roomies drank even though they were all over 21 and she made lots of friends who lived at Vista, too.
I'm sure some of the kids have a hard time at Disney and lots of experiences might not be as positive as my daughter's. But, I would not hesitate AT ALL recommending this program to any one who truly wants this experience.......In fact, my daughter is seasonal and might even do another CP semester. Sorry to be so long-winded, but I wanted to share some of the positive experiences that my daughter had......(She still keeps in touch with so many of her co-workers, roomies and other friends she made.) |

Re: Working At Disney?
AnnaBanana, that is great news... my daughter is very interested in the CP, and she keeps mentioning it! I still have a few years to deal with that, though! lol

Re: Working At Disney?
Llama,
I am sorry that your daughter had to go through that and I am glad she is doing better. I was very saddened when reading this. My daughter has planned for years to go to work for Disney and I am heart sick that anyone would be treated this way. I do agree with the poster who talked about the CM's cleaning the dorm. We happened to pass by what we were told was a dorm building once. It was round and looked a little like a tree house, and to tell you the truth from the boat you could see it was filthy. On the flip side if you have ever visited a college dorm you run into the same thing. I remember my sister in law getting very sick when she went away to college. Staying in a dorm/house with a group of girls/boys germs tend to spread rapidly. Mix in the partying that we all knows goes on, run down from work/school. The sickness was just waiting to happen. That could be what took place here. Prior to my sister in law going away for college she never drank. That changed when she was around that enviroment. It happens. I am not saying that this is the case with your daughter, just that I could see it happening. I am so sorry for any CM's that are under paid or mistreated. It goes against what we all love Disney for. You have given me pause and I will seriously reconsider allowing my DD getting into working for Disney. Thank you for sharing.

Re: Working At Disney?
Hmm....I wonder if that was really a dorm or one of the treehouse villas that have been left vacant and in disrepair for many years?

Re: Working At Disney?
When we went by the tree houses last Christmas there were international students (so we were told by the boat captain) living in them and they were all lit up and decorated with Christmas lights and some even had Christmas trees.

I know that all the points (positive and negative) are valid. I didn't mean to imply that it was Disney's fault that Emily got sick - it was their treatment of her when she was sick. A very long time member here worked for Disney (not in a Program) for years - she was dealing with a serious illness and Disney's treatment of her was less than stellar as many here can attest. Also, please remember that most here are comparing the CP to the IP program - they are vastly different. Their dorms are several miles apart. IP kids are not to take part in any programs EXCEPT the work their Visas indicate. And the pay is $3.00 a hour. That is just a fact. As for the housekeeping - I was referring more to the maintenance of the dorms than anything else. But I still think it's ridiculous for kids living on $3.00 an hour to have to RENT a vacuum. This debate can go on forever - for and against - but that was not my reason for posting. As a mother I wanted other mothers (and kids) from other countries to be aware of what CAN happen. We wish that Emily's experience had been wonderful - and in many ways it was - she met wonderful kids from many countries, made friendships and certainly had "high" moments. Within her group she was the first to earn her Ears, first to become server - many rewarding experiences. Unfortunately the bad outweighed the good in her case - and in the cases of many friends she made. I think this will be my last comment on this matter.

Re: Working At Disney?
I think everyone has made great points. What I would like to add is this happens everyhwere. Disney, college, first jobs, life. There are great workers, studious students, slackers, people (not just kids) doing just enough to get by, people who will take advantage of others and those who will go beyond the norm to help others. Just like there are great guests and pain in the neck guests. It's everywhere and it's both sides.
It's a good idea to point out the bad and the good. It can only help when one goes into a new situation. I think as a guest you probably have ran into CM's that really love their job - they are the ones who are having the great experience. And unless you are very lucky, you have also ran into CM's that aren't so great. And now it's easier to understand why. In a perfect world, the CM's experience would be as wonderful at a guest's experience is suppose to be. But we all know, this isn't a perfect world. I think we all expect it to be perfect at Disney, no matter what side you are on, afterall it's the Happiest Place on Earth. Thanks to every for their comments. We all need to be more aware of the bad. And that there is good too.

Re: Working At Disney?
Thanks, this board has been really helpful. I'm now considering going back either seasonal or do another program....but now I'll keep my eyes more open.
