Any tips for FW?

Hi All-
We're going in early January and it's our first time staying on site. Does anyone have any tips/advice about Fort Wilderness. We're staying in a cabin. It will be me,DH,DD(4yo), DS(2yo) and my Mom. I'm a little confused about the transportaion around the FW property, is it really big? Too far to walk from here to there? Can you walk to Wilderness Lodge?
I also want to make sure we get the most out of our stay. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks,
pixie1098

Re: Any tips for FW?

As far as I know you can't walk to the wilderness lodge. Transportation is big. They have 2 kinds of buses. One goes up the other one goes down. There are different kinds of loops. On the map the loops look small but they are pretty big. Make sure you make it to the campfire everynite to meet chip and dale. They have 2 different movies everynite that you watch outside and roast marshmallows. That's all I can remember right now. That was my home hotel when I was a CM. If I remember anything ese I'll let you know.

BTW: Welcome to DC!

Re: Any tips for FW?

I don't know about the transportation issues, but I just watched a show about FW on the travel channel.

Be sure not to miss the campfire. Chip and Dale are there and everyone gets to roast marshmallows.

I believe the Hoop Dee Doo Revue is over there. This is personally on my list of Must-do's. I've not done it yet, but I plan to. From what I've read it's a LOT of fun.

I wish I knew more about the resort to help you.

There is a website called www.allearsnet.com that has SO much information.
You'll be able to look up WF and get alot of answers.

Re: Any tips for FW?

Our first trip to WDW we stayed at Fort Wilderness but it was years ago. We were so excited about the parks, we never made it to the campfire. We loved the resort and felt almost like we were there alone since the cabins are surrounded by forest. I think you will really enjoy your stay. As I remember (and that was years ago), transportation took a while to get where you were going, so allow plenty of time and relax and enjoy the ride.

Re: Any tips for FW?

I think there is a path to the WL but it's a mile walk.

We have never stayed at FW but we have visited. The dinner buffet at the Trail's End is not to be missed. Great simple grub!

Re: Any tips for FW?

There is a hiking/jogging trail to from the FW to WL resorts. It's quite the hike. No pun intended. The transportation around FW and to parks is quite long. You have to take inner resort transportation to get to the bus stops that take you to the park. The only the other option with that is to rent a golf cart. They run around $45 a day + tax and can be reserved up to a year in advance by calling the Bike Barn (407) 824-2742. They are available for rent at FW and can cut your walking/bus time down a bit. To get to the MK, take the boat launch. It's located by beach past the pool and stuff. That launch can take you to the WL and also to the Comtemporary which gives you a few more dining options. FW is huge, so keep in mind that traveling to other places is just going to take a bit of time. Coming back to your resort for a midafternoon break will take time. If you have this in your mind and understand it, the transportation issues here will be expected and not a stressful thing for you. The cabins are located in loops 2100-2800 with 2800 being the closest to check-in and furthest from the boat launch, but closest to the main bus stop. I would try to get it noted on your reservation that you would like loop 2800 in order to get the fastest transportation. It will be fine. Keep your mind open and all will be fine.

Re: Any tips for FW?

I'll put in my .02- Having been to FW twice recently, the golf cart, while pricey, made a big difference! Rent for 7 days and receive a 10% discount.

Re: Any tips for FW?

i just came back from visiting last week and i took the walk to WL from FW. It was a nice walk and it is about a mile. You can also rent bikes to make the trip. Use the boat for MK or visiting the WL or even Contemporary. Nights there are great. Makes me think of the old disney progama on TV as a youngster. Hoop TE Do, although pricey some think, is a fun evening.
Nice dinner at WL also.

Re: Any tips for FW?

Make sure you do the Campfire Sing a Long with Chip and Dale. It is terrific. I did it with my DD in Oct. and we had a blast. We sang, roasted marshmallows, she got to spend quality time with Chip (her fav), and watched the Disney movie on the great big outdoor screen. It was an incredibly pleasant way to spend an evening. You can check and see which movie is playing which night to see if there is one you would prefer over another. Helpful hint: buy the marshmallows at the Meadow trading post. The big bag there is cheaper and bigger than the bag you will get at the campfire. You can buy just the skewers at the campfire for 35 cents a piece. Also if you want, you can bring a three pronged grill fork and purchase a packe of hot dogs at the Meadow trading post as well and they will let you roast hot dogs as well. It is great. However, do NOT try to skewer the hot dogs to cook them. It will not work. I saw someone try this. They lost their hot dog in the fire. Use a three pronged grill fork. It's sturdier.

Everyone needs to try the Chip and Dale campfire Sing a Long. It has been at FW for a long time. We went when I was little (It wasn't exactly the same.) I just have to tell you that it is a great family treat and it is the cheapest thing to do at Disney and very few people know about it. It's terrific. Plan to do it. THe next time you go. Ot will be a great treat for your family and another incredible Disney memory you won't soon forget.

Re: Any tips for FW?

I can tell you that transportation at Disney is out of this world. You should not worry about that part of your trip at all....
