Any bad stories about renting DVC points?
This is long sorry!! Back in January I booked ressies for May 14-21 at POP Century, just to make sure I had a place to stay. Then about three weeks ago I started working with a DVC member to rent points for a studio at BWV for Sun-Thurs (May 15th-20th). The BWV ressie came through last week and yesterday I received the confirmation from her. I then sent her a certified check for the total. She is charging only $9.00/point and so I got five nights in a studio at BWV for $585.00 ($117.00/night). She's going to DL in July and hotels out there are 55 points/night, so she decided to rent her points at WDW and pay cash for a hotel at DL.
Today when the codes came out, I called planning to cancel my May 14-May 21 POP ressie and rebook four weekend nights at POP (May 13th-14th and May 21st-22nd). I got scared though and wound up just adding two nights onto my POP ressie (making it May 13-22). I thought I would keep the POP ressie until 5 days prior to check-in and if the BWV ressie was still there, I'd still have time to cancel the POP ressie (or rather cancel the middle five days of it). This lady seems very nice and has alot of posts over on the DisBoard. However she told me she had a bad experience once with a renter backing out on her and the only other person she's rented to is a co-worker. What is to keep her from cancelling my BWV ressie after she gets my check? The fact that the owner controls the ressie and can cancel up until the night prior to arrival scares me. Anyone have any bad experiences renting points? I really want to simply trust her and cancel the five middle days of the POP ressie. Right now I have nine nights at POP for $743.00 or five nights in a studio at BWV and four nights at POP for $915.20. For $171.20 difference and a chance to stay at BWV right next to MGM and Epcot (during the flower festival) someone please tell me something to get over this fear, so I can cancel five days of that POP ressie. PLEASE!!!! Again I really don't think she would cancel on me, but the possiblity that she could terrifies me. Last edited by aubriee; 03-09-2005 at 09:11 AM. |

It sounds to me that she is as worried about you as you are about her.
If she has told you about a bad experience she had then I don't think she's going to turn around and cancel on you. If you have a good vibe from her on the DIS boards too then I would not worry. There is no harm in keeping your POP until you have to cancel but I wouldn't keep worring. ![]()

Re: Any bad stories about renting DVC points?
aubriee,
I haven't heard any horror stories, but I believe the recommended way of doing this is to put your money in escrow. When you get to the resort and everything is in order, you then release payment. It sounds like it would have been worth the peace of mind... I think you'll be fine though. From her point of view, I doubt that it would be worth all of the headaches of cheating you...for $585.
