Home away from home treehouses

What is up with those awful looking, falling apart "home away from home 'treehouses'" near downtown Disney? I can't believe they are still there. Is there anything planned to take over that area?
I'm very surprised Disney is allowing such an eyesore, and for so long!!

I saw those this April. What are they? So families really stay in them?

Re: Home away from home treehouses

I have hear there was an environmental issue on the land the treehouses are on which severely limits the use of this area. However, because of grandfather clause, the treehouses could be refurbished. I haven't heard Disney has any current plans for the treehouses.

Re: Home away from home treehouses

The boat Capt. from DTD to POR was a wealth of info on this.
We were told that the Treehouses were part of the deal when the vacation ownership company took over Disney Institute and started Saratoga Springs. But the area is in legal limbo because of a "Wetlands Law". We saw extensive damage done to the treehouses as a result of the Hurricanes, but the property is still maintained and according to the Capt., immediate plans to remove or upgrade depend on the ongoing the environmental issues.

Yes, families really stayed in them. They were once part of the Disney Institute. Here is a little info on the DI:

Re: Home away from home treehouses

We were told a similar story by our DTD boat captain. He said that Eisner tried to tear down the treehouses, but was not allowed to due to the grandfathering of the buildings into the new law. At this point, he said, they cannot be torn down, but I'm sure they could be refurbished. At the moment, they just look sort of sad down there. Takes a bit of the "magic" out of staying at current resorts thinking they could end up like that some day... . Disney really should do something with those.

Re: Home away from home treehouses

I saw them recently. The treehouses really took a beating from the hurricanes that hit Florida last year. I saw roofs torn apart and trees resting on the side of the buildings. Disney deffinitely has alot more work now when refurbing them. They're an utter mess!

Thank you for posting, DT. I haven't ever seen them, but they certainly don't seem disneyish...do they?

Re: Home away from home treehouses

My mom stayed in the Treehouse Villas a long time ago. She said the layout was very interesting. I think it's really neat and I wish they would refurb them and open them back up because I would love to stay in one.

Not really but I think that was the whole idea of the Disney Institute. We almost stayed in one years ago but we picked CBR due to the price.

Re: Home away from home treehouses

My inlaws stayed in them once, and they were awesome!! 3 families could stay there. Very Disney-ish, A huge hotel room as a tree house. How cool is that?!?!?!

Re: Home away from home treehouses

When you say it like that, Darth - it SOUNDS very cool...
They just didn't LOOK that cool.

I take it they aren't being used now? Were they being used until the hurricanes?

Re: Home away from home treehouses

They have been empty and sitting unused for several years. It's really too bad.
