Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

We've never been down for the Holidays but want to avoid as many people as possible and find some good lodging deals. We're flexible. Advice?

Re: Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

Really anytime between the end of Thanksgiving weekend and the week of Christmas is a good time to go. With semester final exams and people getting ready for "Christmas Vacation" the parks are pretty empty. Expect to walk onto the rides.

And welcome to DC!

Re: Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

We have been the week after Thanksgiving and the crowds were pretty light and for the most part the weather was good. There was only one day that we almost froze our noses off, but the rest were nice and warm!

Oh yeah...and WELCOME!

Yes that is a great time to go. Smaller crowds and cooler weather.

And Welcome to DC.

Re: Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

We ALWAYS go Dec. 18-23. The crowds are minimal. The closer you get to Christmas the bigger the crowds get. The weather has been different each time. One year it was FREEZING!! But most years it has been perfect--cool in the mornings and evenings but comfortable during the day. We usually wear shorts and layers on top. Shirts with sweatshirts on top. That way we can take off the sweatshirts during the day and put them back on at night.

Re: Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

We've been in early Dec for the past 3 years now. Crowds are low starting at the end of the weekend after Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving crowds don't all disperse until late Saturday/early Sunday. The next week is smooth sailing. Plus all the decorations are up.

As the others have already mentioned, the weather is a toss-up. Could be chilly, could be gorgeous. You have to pack for all weather conditions.

Re: Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

Anytime between Thanksgiving and mid December is great. However, let me add, 2004 we went the week after Thanksgiving and I don't mean to burst any bubbles, but they were taping the Christmas Day Parade. I know, I was naive in thinking the parade was live, but it isn't folks. There were so many people there you couldn't move. Kelly and Regis, Raven, and a host of other sitcom stars that had everything backed up. They were taping on Main Street and they had sidewalk traffic detoured all over the place. It really did make for an inconvenience and a real issue for us. If I ever find out about the parade taping again, I'm going to another park that day.

I was there in 2003 during the parade taping. We just avoided the MK that day and everything was fine. This is a great time of year to visit, but as others have said be prepared for any kind of weather!

Re: Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

Welcome to DC! I am partial to the beginning of Dec. myself! And, fellow dc'ers, how does one find out when they are going to tape the parade? Is it published somewhere?

Re: Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

Beginning of December is good, but watch out for large groups in the value resorts. I think there is a cheerleading group or something like that going around the first week of Dec. !

Re: Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

Excellent information. We booked out trip to All Star Movies last week for travel the Monday after Thanksgiving. This will be my 2nd time and my wife's 5th time I believe. It will also be my mothers 1st time. We are very excited.

More info about the Parade taping would be greatly appreciated. I'll look around the net for stuff. But if some one knows anything, that would be great.

Re: Best time to visit between Thanksgiving & Christmas?

Welcome to DC. This is a great time to go.
I agree with all that has been said.
The Cheerleading thing is the Pop Warner football championships that include Ceerleaders. They stay in the All Star Resorts which get pretty crowded and at times the kids can be pretty rowdy.
We always go this time of year. Last year the 2nd week of December was pretty cold. We were wearing sweatshirts and jeans. The week before that we were wearing shorts.
