Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

Ok, I am thinking of taking a giant leap and maybe stay at a new resort. We are so comfortable at CBR but I want to try another resort.

CSR we thought was too spread out and the thought of having to tip to be seated in a foodcourt just didn't sit well (don't know if that has changed though), along with maybe conventions going on.

We looked at POR and I really liked it. I know a lot of you have stayed there and love it. Please tell me what you like and dislike, where to stay in the resort and things to do on down time. We normally rent a car so parking close to the room would be a plus.

Thanks
Kim

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

I've stayed at POR three times and absolutely LOVE it! I'd stay again in a heartbeat. It's such a beautiful resort.

Disclaimer: I've never stayed at another moderate so I can't compare, but have stayed at the All Stars and at WL.

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

LOVE it...we've only stayed there once but will be going back in September. We stayed in Alligator Bayou and have requested to stay there again. We'd like to get building 14 or 15 nex time, but we stayed in 27 last time and it was right on the river and just a short walk to the main building and two different bus stops.

The pool is great - it was DS's first experience with a water slide! The food court was good...we never did breakfast there, but the lunch/dinner selections were good. I had the chicken quesadilla MULTIPLE times!

My favorite perks about POR are the carriage rides and BOB performing in the River Roost Lounge....he is AMAZING! You CAN NOT miss him (even if you don't stay at POR)!

The only negatives, I guess, are that the bus stops are still pretty far away at most parks. But still usually better (and less crowded) than the value buses.

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

Haven't stayed there in a long time - but it was the first resort we stayed at at WDW and we went back four times. It's a wonderful resort. I guess the only con I can think of is that it's quite big, but the grounds are beautiful and walking around is enjoyable. The food court was very good and you have the nice boat to DTD. Personally, I liked POFQ better - it was smaller and more intimate and I loved the architecture - but POR is an excellent choice.

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

Stayed at POFQ, but was close enough that DW and I used the pool and facilities there. The pool IMO was better at POR than POFQ, even though kids seem to love that dragon slide. Food court was bigger and had better offerings at POR as well as an actual sit down restaurant.
Theming was very nice at POR, living in an area that has southern antebellum houses, magnolia bend was right on the money. Same can be said about POFW wrought iron style houses too, very good theming.
PO resort is very nice and if I wasn't so bent on staying at every resort at least once I would stay there again.
I will say the small size of POFQ has spoiled me and trying to stay at CSR, CBR, or even POR has me scared of long walks around the resort.

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

The pro's of staying at PO. Both resorts are beautifully themed, the food courts are good, as is Boatwright's at POR.

I personally like the atmosphere at POR more than at POFQ, although I enjoy both of them.

The one con to staying at POR is that the busses are shared with French Quarter which gets picked up first, so, in busy seasons, you may be dealing with a huge crowd when it gets to your stop. Other than that, I think they're both about equal. Oh, it's also more spread out than POFQ, so if walking is an issue, you may want to pick POFQ

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

We have stayed there twice and found it to be very charming. It doesn't feel like just a big resort. It almost feels like a neighborhood. It is our favorite moderate so I really do not have anything bad to say about it except that I always get lost walking around the place!

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

POR is my absolute favorite resort. I have stayed there 3 times and am going back for my 4th stay in 5 years in August. I have also stayed at POFQ which is very nice too.

I love the total atmosphere at POR - it is a beautiful place to come back to at the end of a busy day at the parks. Even when the resort is filled almost to capacity, it still feels serene and isolated.

The food court is great, though busy in the morning and I have never had any trouble with the buses, though the sharing with POFQ does take a little longer than if the buses visited just one resort.

You will love POR - go for it!

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

POR is definitely my favorite mod resort. The only other moderate we have stayed is CSR, and hands down POR is my favorite!! We are going again in Sept and this time we have requested to stay in the Alligator Bayou section.
We have always stayed in the Magnolia Mansions section which is beautiful!!

We likes CSR, but there is something special about POR.
Everything about POR is beautiful, and the food court is great for breakfast.

I can't think of 1 negative...

I got turned around several times on our last trip too. After I got home I found a tip that would have been particularly helpful -- but of course I can't locate it again. Anyway, the sidewalks at Alligator Bayou are painted two different colors. One color runs from the parking lots to the river and the other sidewalks are a different color. Once I got to the river I always knew where I was...but getting there was difficult sometimes (especially at night). Now I've just got to find out the color designations again before we go back!

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

Pros:
There are a lot of nice things there. Rooms, landscaping, food, plus it is Disney. You can't go wrong staying there.
Cons:
It is not CBR.

Re: Pros and Cons of Port Orleans

The 1 reason we have changed to POFQ is because as AP holders we get the DDE card and it is not accepted in the food court at CSR because the food court is not owned by Disney! Joe

Joe is that new? We used ours there last year? Or maybe we only ate at Maya Grill and only they accept it?

Yes...I think Joe is referring to the Pepper Market? (I think that's the name...)
