in-room data ports?
Greetings!
My wife just picked up the new 2003 WDW brochure from the local travel agent, and among the ammenities for some of the resorts it listed "data port". Does this mean I can bring my laptop down and access the internet via ethernet, or is this simply an extra phone jack for a modem? |

It is simply a phone port in the side of the telephone. None of the resorts have high speed internet into the rooms, though there are several resorts with high speed internet in the lobby that is accessible via pay per minute terminal.

I've got a question about the phone/computer thing. I know everyone says not to make calls as they're so expensive, but how does pricing for email work??? I'm on earthlink, and there's a local Orlando number I can dial into. How much do I get charged -- is it by the minute or by the call??? Is there a difference between plugging the computer modem phone cord into an empty "data" port in the room as opposed to unplugging the phone and plugging it in there????? I REALLY need to have my computer with me as my postcards never arrive until AFTER I've come back!, but I don't want to be sending out $5 email postcards either! help! :)

Last time I was there the cost was $.75 per call, regardless of where you were calling (local, of course) or for how long. I always take my laptop with me, and use it to connect to the internet. They dont charge you per minute, just per call. The data-port is only there so that you don't have to take the phone wiring apart, you just plug it into the phone.
As an alternative, many of the resorts and parks now have high speed terminals that charge a per minute fee to access the internet. I thought it was affordable when I looked into it, about $1 for 5 minutes. There is also an internet cafe in Disney Quest and you can send email postcards for free from several places in EPCOT.
