Tell me about the petting zoo at FW.

I just got a thing from disney geared toward toddlers and it mentions the petting zoo and pony rides at FW. I thought it had closed. Also I've heard about some stuff at downtown disney for little kids. I've never been to downtown disney. On our Sept/Oct trip on at least one night we will have our 2 yr DGD. I was thinking the next morning have breakfast at trails end and then go to the petting zoo, but I don't know a thing about it. Any help???

Re: Tell me about the petting zoo at FW.

First of all, GO TO TRAIL'S END!!! It's one of those "off the beaten path' GEMS!! And yes, the Fort Wilderness petting zoo is open, there are some pictures of it on my May '06 trip report, or was that August '06? Who knows, but it's a really BIG petting zoo and thankfully they have sinks with soap and sanitizers by the exit!

Re: Tell me about the petting zoo at FW.

It is fun...however, it's very small. If I remember, there was goats, chickens, pigs, miniature horses, and sheep? Maybe a little more....

After you go through the petting zoo, you can also go into the barn.

I'd say it's about an hours worth of fun....stretching it.

LOL, it's funny different peoples perceptions!!!

Maybe I think it's small because I live on a farm???

To me it's hecka' big, I guess b/c I've always been a semi-city girl. I think I was also comparing it to the petting area at Animal Kingdom in Conservation Station, now THAT is a tiny petting zoo. Either way I personally think it's pretty cool. It's rustic & usually pretty quiet. I DO agree it's an hour, tops, activity though!

Re: Tell me about the petting zoo at FW.

An hour looking at chickens and goats sounds long enough for me.

What about the pony rides? Anybody notice those?

How about just the FW grounds, any playgrounds close to trail end? The plan is to give her parents about 24 hrs of kid-free time.

Re: Tell me about the petting zoo at FW.

Yes. There were pony rides there. I believe that you lead the child around yourself. (after you pay of course!)

There is a playground, but I can't remember if it was close to the petting zoo or the pool.

Wish-I agree, that petting zoo at AK is small!! The theming at Fort Wilderness is so great too.

Re: Tell me about the petting zoo at FW.

I think this is a great alternative fun event at WDW. They do have pony rides and a petting zoo area. Also the barn for the Main Street horses is right there so you can see those beautiful animals. Lastly, we go over to the beach area and the kids dig in the sand for a while. IMO it is a great low key time.

It is a buffet meal at FW. Real basic simple foods but very good and much less expensive than other meals. Darn crowded at dinner time to get in so plan ahead!

Re: Tell me about the petting zoo at FW.

Just wanted to mention that they also have mouse boats you can rent and several different types of bicycles. Some of which have multiple seats and suncovers, oh.. and they also have golf carts.... Definitely do Trail's End.. we travel to FW each trip just to eat there.. love it! Petting Zoo is OK.. but you do not need a lot of time to do it. If you have a ADR for HDD or TE then that is something to do to pass the time.

Not to mention an hour is more than enough time for smelling goats and chickens.
