Hi DisneyMaverick! I don't know anything about universal area hotels, however if you're just looking to save a few$$ and some personal recommendations, here goes....
If I were checking in at 1a.m. and not really doing Disney or the resort those first 3 days, I would stay at All Star Movies or Music.:) You are still on Disney property, but at Holiday Inn prices! This will save you $$$ and it will be that much easier to switch over to the Boardwalk from there(another Disney resort) than an outside hotel. That's just my thought! Good Luck! AMY

I liked the Grosvenor, we had a great view of Downtown Disney and it was great to be able to walk to it! The pools were large, the gift shop was great, the buses were AWFUL though. I would never stay off property again, it just didn't have that whole Disney feel to it!:) Hope this helps, Mav!

Welcome to DisneyCentral! I'm going to be heading down in December with my boyfriend also. As much as we would love to stay in a deluxe resort (someday though!), our budget won't allow us, so were staying at Port Orleans Riverside. Since the Disney codes aren't out yet for that time, were hoping to get it for around $90.00 a night. You can take the boat to Downtown Disney at night which is a great "couple" thing to do, and I've heard nothing but good things on it so just another hotel to think about! Have a great trip!:D
