Requesting Upgrade at Check-in

Hey all!

I have a question. I have just requested reservations from Mouseketrips to stay at the Yacht Club December 11-18, 2007. And for the first time for us, we have requested a Concierge Level room. I have seen where people have posted that they plan to make an upgrade request to change their room view when they check-in. They would request they change their standard view room to a water view room for example. My question is, what is the best way to request this type of upgrade to increase the chances of getting it? I know some people have had success at this and I am sure it depends on how full the resort is, but is there a secret to making this kind of request?

This is our first stay at the Yacht Club. We have stayed at the Beach Club and Boardwalk. I was tempted to stay at the Beach Club again, but for some strange reason I have this weird desire to try a different resort each time we visit Disney World. Anyone else have this illness?

God bless!

Re: Requesting Upgrade at Check-in

I hate to say it, but it depends on how full the Resort is, how nice you ask, and the CM as well. We have been upgraded 1 time in 5 trips. We ask every time, but if the resort is close to being full, you may be out of luck.

It doesn't hurt to ask though.

Re: Requesting Upgrade at Check-in

You simply say "are there any upgrades available?" If you are going at a slow time of the year, your chances are greater than when it's busier. I have been on ten trips and have been upgraded all but four of those times...not bad odds.

Do you turn them down?

I only had them say that the upgrade would cost me more once. I then said forget it and told them to make sure the room was a smoking room....I got upgraded anyway. The smoking rooms (when you were allowed to smoke) was only in the best sections of the resort...

Yes, Sharon has been on a mission to stay at all of the resorts. The only ones we have not stayed at are POP, CSR. We still fall back on our favorites though.

Re: Requesting Upgrade at Check-in

The fact that you're already concierge level guests works a little in your favor. You aren't asking for an outlandish upgrade. I'd say your odds are roughly 50/50. There is very little, if any reall difference between the Yacht and Beach. In many ways, they function as one large resort. We stayed at Yacht in June and had a simple garden view. I asked if we could get a better view, noting it really was my birthday. We got a minor upgrade to a room with a quiet pool view, but not a water view as I'd hoped. We also switch around resorts, though we have repeated at AS Sports, AKL, Yacht, and Contemporary. The only ones missing are AS Movies, Coronado Springs, Saratoga Springs, and Grand Floridian. Of that group, I have a feeling that we might skip all of them other than the GF.
But for the view upgrade, ask. The worst they can say is no or it will cost you an extra $x per night.

Re: Requesting Upgrade at Check-in

After reading several threads on upgrades I asked for one and they were available but at a cost so I said no thanks. I regret rejecting the offer because I really wanted to stay in the tower section at the Contemporary but the wing worked just fine too.

Yes I have the same sickness; I want to stay at all of the resorts at least once. So far one down and abouuuuuuut eighteen to go.

Re: Requesting Upgrade at Check-in

Staying in a different resort is part of the fun of the vacation, we try to change every trip.
Our best upgrade was to the Tree House villas. We went from a 1 bedroom villa at the Disney Institute to the weird Tree Houses. Lot's of fun and lots of spiders staying on the river banks! We had fun watching the boats come by every few minutes, and then around 2 am the party'ers would come by heading home from Pleasure Island!!

Well, that ain't gonna happen ever again. From what I've seen posted, the Tree Houses are mostly gone and the ones left standing aren't in such great shape.
Change isn't always for the best, I guess.

They were not in the best shape then - clean, but outdated. Glad I had the chance to experience - I have a ton of Pics somewhere on a disk.
