Old Key West

So now that I am all booked up, super pumped and literally have not talked about anything but going to Disney ALL day I want to know more about Old Key West. At first I was a little weary about it just because of its size but after watching the slide show 40934230389 times on allearsnet.com I am starting to get really really really excited about the resort..

So..(Llama)..tell me all about it if you've stayed there! Also, has anyone been to Olivia's?? We were thinking about eating there because we've never actually gotten to eat at resort we were staying at!

Also, I read on allearsnet.com that there is a bus that interconnects the resort? That was foreign to me..what's that mean? And also, is there a boat to DTD?

Re: Old Key West

Hi Bella! OKW is such a great resort! We LOVE to stay in Building 18. Just so you know, most buildings don't have an elevator (only a few do) so keep that in mind. I actually prefer a 2nd or 3rd floor, but some people don't want to lug their bags up and down. After a long day in the parks, I like to sit out on the patio/balcony and listen to the bullfrogs croaking (other then that its SUPER quiet!). Building 18 has a good view of part of the golf course (w/fountain) one of the pools and a bus stop are both nearby, as well.

The inter-resort bus route JUST runs through the resort. It will pick you up, take you up to the hospitality house/general store area which is also where the workout room, main pool and the boat launch for the boats to downtown disney!

Be sure to check out more photos on Laura's website SuiteDisney

Re: Old Key West

We have eaten at Olivia's. It is actually quite nice. It reminds me so much of an old beach cafe. Just come on in, sand and all. Food is great. I highly recommend the Onion Rings and sauces. There is also an outside bar connected to Olivia's. Very cool place to grab a drink and relax at the pool.

The Goods to Go (I think that is what it is called) is connected to the other side of Olivia's. It is a really nice gift shop. They sell tons of DVC items, tons of souveniers, food of all sorts. Just about anything you need, they have it.

The Pools at OKW is very nice. At the main big pool, it was always full of kids. They have a great slide. A couple of the days we were there, they had a DJ playing fun music. She had the people in the pool dancing, playing beach ball, catching rings around their heads.. just a lot of fun, even prizes. For a more relaxing pool experience, we had one just around the corner from our room. We got so lucky with our room location.

They also have a nice golf course, if you are into that.

Our room was very nice, and a very good size. We stayed in a suite on the first floor. We heard NOTHING going on around us. We were however, just a few steps from the bus stop, small pool, and laundry (Free by the way) which was very nice. We had an outdoor seating area, with a ceiling fan.. nice. We didnt use it though, cause it was just too hot and humid.

Re: Old Key West

Oh, forgot to mention our room had a built in sink with cabinets, refrigerator, coffee maker & microwave. They also provide dishes, cups, paper towels, dish soap, coffee, tea, creamers, sugar, etc. The fridge is actually quite large. We fit a gallon of milk, 24 water bottles & soda in it.

The bathroom was LARGE. There was plenty of room on the counter tops for all my "necessities" and still room left over for Rlander's stuff! We had a first floor room, I think it was handicap accessible, so we had a rather large walk in shower as well. I must say the TV was rather tiny, but we hardly watched it anyway.

Totally pool kids!! I can't wait to hit that slide!

Daisee thanks for the report on Olivias!! I was pretty much set on it but your review put it over the top..I am a born and bread beach kid so it sounds right up my alley. And I onion rings I'll be sure to get those!!

Free laundry..that's awesome!! I probably won't do any since we're only there for four days and well..I am lazy and hate doing it at home too but it's still pretty awesome it's free!

Re: Old Key West

Bella, thanks for starting this thread. I am staying at OKW in April and have seen a few pictures of the resort but i never looked at the slide show on All Ears. Now i am even more excited about staying there.

BDavis thanks for that link to Laura's website as well.

Daisee thanks for your reviews as well. I really appreciate it.

We aren't big pool people but i do want to take some time this trip to swim.

Re: Old Key West

I'm so excited for you Bella!

OKW is our favourite resort - we'll be there on the 21st! Yay! Olivia's is a wonderful restaurant with good, simple food. The atmosphere is really relaxing. The whole resort is relaxing. A lot of the castmembers have been there for years, and they really make you feel welcome.

I really can't add anything to what Daisee said, except that to us it feels like "home". I love getting away from the craziness of the parks, in the evening. Just sitting on the balcony and having a glass of wine. It's perfect!

The bus service is good - actually the bus service at OKW and SSR is far superior to the other DVC properties.

Hope you love it as much as we do!

Re: Old Key West

I can only add, if you have the budget and can swing a one bedroom instead of a studio (anyone, not just Bella) it's almost like being home. Or at least, in someone else's home. Of course, this gives you a real kitchen, but then again, do you really want to cook that often while you're on vacation?
As for Olivia's, we only stayed for one day, so we didn't get the chance to try it. But I've seen menus and some recipes, so I'd say it's at least a safe bet for a good meal.
