Fort Wilderness Hayride
Has anyone ever done the Fort Wilderness hayride? Can you give me some information on it? Was it worth it? Was it crowded? Are there characters there? If so, who? Any suggestions for making it a pleasant experience? Do you recommend it? Is there somewhere great to eat at that resort afterward? (We've done the Hoop De Doo Review already)
Always looking for extra stuff to do in the evenings outside of the park. Thanks for any information you can give me.:)

I remember reading somebody's trip report that they did the hayride so hopefully they will respond. I do know that the Campfire at Fort Wilderness features Chip 'N Dale with a sing-a-long and marshmallow roast. I've heard that Trails End Buffeteria is an EXCELLENT place to eat and the $ is the best value at WDW. There is also a petting zoo and pony rides there. I hope we get a chance to check it out this time!

The campfire sing a long sounds fun too. Is there a limit on guests, or can anyone attend?

Anyone can attend the campfire. Its free! Bring your own marshmellows and sticks, bug spray and perhaps a flashlight. Sticks and marshmellows can be purchased there for a reasonable price. After the Sing Along there will be a Disney Movie shown on a big out door screen.
The Hey Ride is always cancelled for inclement weather. But its affordable and fun! $8 for Adults and $4 for children. Its first come first served. And be sure to catch the fireworks ride. The wagon rides are sched. through the night and you get the times by calling x2788 or try The Fort Wilderness Pioneer Hall. There are several things to do all day long at Fort Wilderness...lots of them are free.

I've stayed at FW more than any other place (I've stayed at all WDW resorts that opened before 1996, plus the Boardwalk). I did the Hayride and the Canoe ride, and really enjoyed both for reasons other than the novelty of the events (I'm a Canadian outdoorsman).
I had a blast with going on these side-trips with people who don't normally do that sort of thing (I've done week-long canoe trips). With the Disney air, it was GREAT!!! Not to mention the fact that it was completely different terrain than I've been used to (swamps vs. lakes). However, I cannot stress enough - WEAR LOTS OF INSECT REPELLENT!!! Florida swamps are loaded with mosquitoes and they have detected West Nile in the area. The odds of serious illness are low, but use high DEET repellent (except on children under 6 mos.). This is not alarmist - I'm going back to FW in Sept 2003 - but realistic (I do have a degree in Toxicology). These side-trips are really fun, and are one of the endearing parts of FW (besides renting golf carts, bikes, playing beach v-ball, having a BBQ after a day at the parks, etc.). I hope you see where I'm coming from...

This is the first I have ever heard of a hay ride of marshmellow roast! We are staying at the CS. How far is it from FW? Can I get there by bus? I would love to hear some more experiences about these. Do they still have them in Oct?

Hayride in 2000
I went on the hayride in 2000 but there was not a campfire then. It is a lot of fun, but passing by the swamps in the heat of summer does have aromatic disadvantages. Makes me wonder how someone can camp in FL in the summer, but that's another story. I enjoyed the hayride and recommend it. Nice to take the hayride after Hoop-de-Doo, in fact, skip Hoop-de-Doo but take the Hayride!
