There have been times where we have left for park opening and not returned to the room till after midnight!
Then how does it already work at Universal with 3 gorgeous 'pet friendly' hotels?

Re: Pet friendly WDW

On a related note, I wonder how the new "kennel" is coming along. Disney announced a pet "hotel" to either augment or replace the existing kennels. It is basically a kennel, but a lot fancier where the pets have pools to play in, attendants take them out of the kennels to run around open fenced area etc.

My wife's dog goes to a place like this once a week because they offer day passes.

I would think the Disney's version should be getting close, if I have my timeline correct.

Re: Pet friendly WDW

Maybe it's just my family I don't know, but I can honestly say that nobody in our family stays away from the resort longer than a pet would be left while someone was at work. Actually, they probably would be left home longer alone while my MIL was at work than at WDW.

Oh, it's not a big deal, I just don't have any interest to stay in a room that's had pets in it and I don't want to take my dog with us. When we go to WDW we're gone all day and most of the evening, my dog is happier at home than alone in a strange place.

I read that it was supposed to be built starting in mid-2009 but I haven't heard anything since.

I haven't been to a Loew's site. But many other pet-friendly chains tend to classify pet rooms with smoking rooms. (I understand WDW is NS so not comparing) Anyway, we were stranded in snow at a hotel in WV on the way to OH and could only get a pet/smoking room because all others were Booked! We were miserable.
How many would end up in one of those types at WDW because the other Non's were already booked? So your theory of an all pet facility is feasible, that part I do like, but a building with certain units for/not for imho would not work for that very reason listed.

I honestly don't think Loew's puts people in 'pet friendly' rooms UNLESS they have a pet with them.

I guess people are hinting that my MIL is neglecting her dogs b/c she's bringing them to a pet friendly hotel where they are in a strange place, etc. I personally don't see it that way 'cause they spend a lot of time at the resort & make sure the dogs have things to remind them of home. I am going to assume that most people at home with pets often leave them for up to 6-7 hours while working & I honestly doubt that anyone in my family would be be away from a resort hotel more than 5 hours.

But whatever, I personally think Loew's hotels are just as gorgeous, friendly, CLEAN, chic, and fancy as even the nicest Disney hotel & they've been pet-friendly for years & years.

I'm not hinting at that at all, I have no idea how your MIL vacations. I just know how we do Disney and it wouldn't work with a dog.

Re: Pet friendly WDW

I found this on All-ears, I honestly think this supposed "new luxury pet resort facility" is a perfect solution for people who WANT to stay on property in WDW but have a need to travel with small pets. It sounds like the intent is to have a more upscale 'doggy daycare' resort for pets but I haven't heard anything about this since:

Effective January 10, 2008, the kennels at Walt Disney World converted to management by Best Friends PetCare Inc., a leading provider of pet hospitality in the United States.

The company currently has 44 locations in 18 states and will build a full-service, luxury pet "resort" at Walt Disney World to open on Bonnet Creek Parkway in mid-2009. The new "resort" will provide a full range of services including dog and cat boarding, day care and grooming services as well as doggy day camp.

Best Friends' prices are roughly double with Disney resort guests getting a discount on the overnight fee (see Cost section below); operating hours will remain the same. The kennels at the Transportation and Ticket Center and Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground Kennels will convert first, then on January 24, the Epcot Kennels, then on February 7, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom Kennels. There are no plans for Disney to begin allowing pets to stay in resort rooms, but don't miss the information on the pet friendly services at Fort Wilderness.

For additional information on Best Friends PetCare Inc., visit the website at Pet Boarding , Dog Boarding and Grooming - Pet Care Kennel.

Re: Pet friendly WDW

As a landlord I'd be against it. Too many people just don't keep their pets the way the should - you should see the hardwood floors that were under the carpet in one of my rental houses - from an "outside" dog. Another with new carpet had three professional cleanings and the two year old carpet still had pet odor.

All it takes is one flea covered animal and you can have weeks of problems. And don't get me started on pet hair.

Granted, most DVC owners would take better care of the units and hopefully their pets, but these are also rented to the general public.

Re: Pet friendly WDW

As much as our 2 kids (110 and 85 lb well muscled Labs) are a part of the family they would be too much for many guests as they have to visit, smell, and slobber w/ kisses everyone they come in contact with. That is why we usually leave them home.
When we vacation w/ them we are aware of their needs and go back to our room frequently, but at WDW it just would not work in a regular room. Now a 2BR DVC unit would work as there is more room. I have seen people vacation and be away from the room and forget about the pet for 12+ hrs. Just asking for damage as they are in a new place with nothing to do.

Well, typically, the people who travel with their pets are the dog-crazy people who have trained dogs that wear sweaters and drink Evian. These aren't the dogs in the backyard on chains - they're indoor dogs that travel many places with their owners and are used to this change.

If you ever stayed at a Universal hotel, or any Loews hotel, you'll notice that the dogs are very well-mannered. I was very impressed with the behavior of the dogs at Portofino Bay. I did not observe any dog bothering any guest of the resort.

Here's why:

"bark bark bark Bark Bark Bark BARK BARK BARK!!!!!!!"

My Daisy is a great dog, but she barks when people come near the door. Can you imagine how awful it would be to hear her all night long? I can hardly stand it myself, and I LOVE the little beast.

Just a mention:
I recently parked my car on the street in Greenwich Village directly in front of a store that sold only miniature dogs -- the kind celebutantes keep in their handbag while shopping. The puppies were adorable -- and cost THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS! I am not kidding! Here is the website, complete with a live webcam:

le petit puppy

And then, to top it off, we walked around the corner and up the block, only to find a restaurant that prepared dog carryout food!!! $8 for a serving of dog beef stew!
