Days In, Theming Out

Last September my DW Rona and I went over to the AKL to sample Disney's latest resort (not actually staying there, just there for a nosey). As we approached in our Disney bus, the theming looked good...long, savannah grass, the CM outfits, the music, and of course the building itself.

After disembarking, we wandered up to the front door and stopped to soak in the peaceful ambience of Disney's latest theming achievement....suddenly (insert sound of record abruptly stopping here) - urk. My DW had spotted, climbing through the trees in the middle distance, a Days Inn sign!! What the heck was one of those doing in the middle of the African Savannah??!? Are we really that close to the Edge of the World??:nervous

Feeling a bit dissapointed by this, we made our way into the lobby, where we were extremely grateful that the theming of this new hotel did not dissapoint. Very, very pretty hotel...the Imagineers really outdid themselves this time. I'm sure some taller trees will grow up soon to hide the sign as well.

Anyone else had a sudden or unexpected 'reality moment' whilst in the World?

:weird: OMG!:!: We have stayed at the AKL twice and I never noticed that sign! I wonder if it is something that went up since our visit 11/02? I hope the trees will have grown tall enough to hide that sign before our visit in 11/04!:D I love AKL!

This is scary. Since AKL is so close to the edge of the real world, can you imagine what kind of signs could be planted in the ground. God forbid Billboards.

No! I like my world when I am at AKL! I'm happy there! I have all kinds of neat things, music and animals around me (except for this one crane-type bird that wakes me up with it's screech JUST before the sun comes up each morning:dazed ) But seriously, NO signs, NO billboards, NO nothing from outside WDW!

I wouldn't worry too much about any encroachment of tackiness...the top of the sign itself was only just visible thru the trees, and was perhaps about a kilometre or so away. That was all we could see. Given the speed of plant growth in the area, I'm guessing that they're probably totally obscured by now.

Bearing in mind as well there's a huge amount of Disney-owned forest between the AKL and the outside world, I would say there's 100% no chance of anything else being visible in the future...so sleep easy folks!

(walks off, stage left, slapping self for not grabbing a shot of the sign on the digicam).

Perhaps someone going soon can confirm it is no longer visible?:)

I wouldn't worry too much either.

It was almost a year ago we saw this, on the walk up from the bus stop to the main entrance. If we hadn't stopped to have a really good look around and take in the detail, I don't think I'd have spotted it.

At the time, I did think that if the trees were just a little higher or bushier round the top, it would be obscured, so hopefully it's no longer visible.

But it was a real wake up call at the time, I hadn't realised we were so close to the edge of the world. It's not an experience I want to repeat, how dare the outside world intrude on WDW....
