I was just reading a story about how the hotel market is still growing in Orlando. There are now 116,575 hotel rooms in the Orlando area, up 1.3 percent from 2002. The Lake Buena Vista market, which includes WDW hotels, was up 2.2 percent, to 32,150 rooms -- thanks in part to the opening of the first phase of the Pop Century.

Those are pretty staggering numbers for what once was a sleepy little town surrounded by orange groves.

Orlando is second in the nation in number of hotel rooms. Las Vegas leads the way with 150,625.

Tink, since you mentioned rates, Orlando's overall hotel occupancy for the year was basically unchanged from 2002. The average price of a room slipped 3.5 percent to $84.91. Lake Buena Vista, the region's priciest market, posted an 8.5 percent decline in rates to $108.18 while occupancy rose 1.4 percent to 72.4 percent.

:) so more resorts/hotels, motels maybe what is keeping those rates down. While personally nothing off WDW property would interest us .. its nice to know that WDW does need to compete with those.
