50's prime time cafe

i know a little bit about the 50's prime time cafe and after seeing it on the food network the other day, i really want to go. i just have a few questions about it: is it a buffet or is it a menu? i know the waitresses "harrass" you about finishing your plate but what if you really can't finish your plate? what happens then? on the TV's at the table, do they show clips from TV shows or do they show episodes? is there a jukebox at the cafe as well? that would be cool. thanks to those who respond to my questions.

Re: 50's prime time cafe

Hi Tragic312...Our Family loves to go to 50's PT. To answer a couple of your questions: You order from a menu and the food is very good with generous protions. The waitresses do harrass you if don't finish (mostly the older people from what I saw, but since I licked my plate clean I don't know first hand.) I love when you walk into the "bar" area (waiting to be seated) it is decorated like a 50's style rumpus (sp?) room. The decorations are more in style of home decorations than "Cafe" decorations. I don't remember a juke box but I'm not sure. The tv's are on a loop of quick clips of 50's shows so there isn't a selection. Hope this helps, but remember to save room for desert....they are FANTASTIC!!!!

Last time we went "mom" even teased us about licking our plates!!! But don't worry...even if you don't finish, they'll eventually give in & let you order dessert! It's one of our "can't miss" places every trip. And here's a tip: If you don't like green beans & don't want to be harrassed about not finishing them, ask for corn. It's not on the menu, but they'll gladly substitute it for the green beans if you ask.

Re: 50's prime time cafe

Get the big smores for dessert, they are yummy! No one yelled at us or made us feel uncomfortable at all. It was fun, although a bit pricey. I think I paid $6.50 for my daughters peanut butter sandwich. I had a cheesesteak sandwich and my husband had the meatloaf, both of which were tasty.

Re: 50's prime time cafe

The green beans are really excellent. But it is true that it is the kind of place that you either love or hate. I know that some people go with great expectations and then their waiter or waitress doesn't come across as "mom or dad" and they're disappointed and then others just don't like the "scolding" (I wouldn't call it harrassment) at all. So, decide whether this appeals to you or not before you go. The food is very good when you're missing "comfort foods". Especially the meatloaf or fried chicken. The dessert menu is on a "view master". My kids couldn't believe that was once a form of entertainment!

Re: 50's prime time cafe

Be sure not to put your elbows on the table!! Our waitress gave the boys a math problem to work on while waiting for the meal. Even with DH and I helping with it, we still got it wrong!! LOL

Re: 50's prime time cafe

Have to say that we did not like it. The food was great and the portions were more than enough, but I do not chew with my mouth open, or rest my elbows on the table, I do not want to hear any one being corrected while I am eating. I know it is in the theme and era of the 50's, and it is very well done, it just was not for us.

Re: 50's prime time cafe

After a week of burgers and chicken sandwiches dining at the 50's PT is one of the highlights for us. I like the term comfort food, I had not thought of it that way, but by golly that is what it is. I do have a question for both those who do and do not like the diner, how old are you ( roughly ). My DW and I grew up in the 50's and early 60's so it is really like going home for us and the one kitchen really reminds me of my mothers house, perhaps that is part of what we like about it.

I totally agree about it being "comfort food." BTW, Rafikiman & I are mid-40's & absolutely love it!!! But then we always wanted to grow up in the Beave's family or with Robert Young as our father!

Re: 50's prime time cafe

We ate there this past week. The themeing is neat. It's a menu (not a whole lot of choices, though). I had the meatloaf and it was great! They do reprimand you for putting your elbows on the table. (My f-i-l didn't like this..he just didn't get into that), but it's a cute place. Not one of my faves, but not the worst either.

Re: 50's prime time cafe

We love 50s Prime Time! Last August (can't believe it's been nearly a year since our last trip - yee gads), DD and I had a great waiter. It was the first time we didn't have a "mom" as a server, instead we had an "uncle." He was great. He did all the usual "no elbows on the table" stuff. We even got some extra entertainment when some kids in the family next to us were horsing around and one the spitballs they were shooting at each other landed in my iced tea. Our "uncle" waiter saw it, went to their table and asked who had done it. When the guilty party finally 'fessed up, our "uncle" made the kid (he was about 12) come to our table and apologize! It was all in good fun and we all had a good laugh. We even stayed to eat desert with the other family (S'mores, of course) and we spent the rest of the evening with them on Tower of Terror and Rock 'n Roller Coaster. We have even corresponded back and forth a couple times since then! And just remember - it all started with a spitball!
