'Ohana- Can I go alone?

I really would like to go to 'Ohana on my upcoming trip, only the rest of my family will not eat there - they are very picky eaters and will not even try it. I know it is a family style resturant, but is it possible for a single to go? Has anyone ever gone alone? What should I do? How should I approach it?? Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

Princess D,

I've never been to Ohana's alone but I don't see why you can't?!? They have small tables for two so you should be fine!

Are you going to the character breakfast or to dinner? The food is excellent so maybe you should try to convince the rest of the family! Or compromise! They go to Ohana's with you and you ride ToT with them, how's that?

Also, maybe you can try to hook up with any other DCers that might be there around your same travel dates.

Ciao,
Alfredo

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

Of course you can eat there alone. I think your family is making a mistake with not going. The food is very neutral and even the pickiest of eaters will find something they like. They have shrimp, chicken, pork, steak, wings, wontons, greens, salad and corn bread. Very good too all of it.

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

Dana's right, the food is great but nothing out of the ordinary. If you did have to go on your own they have small tables and I'm sure they would look after you. I'm sure your family would love it we did.

Dana... I agree with you 100%... my DD is very picky too and she loved the food at Ohana's plus she also had a lot of fun with the waiters!

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

Another to agree with Dana. The food is very basic. If your family eats steak or bbq chicken, they shouldn't have any problems. The sides are all very familiar - green beans, fried rice, very yummy wontons. Pineapple with carmel sauce for dessert. What's not to like?

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

Thank you everyone. My family will not eat ANYTHING that has a hint of flavor/spice. My DH and DS eat only limited menus - hot dogs, Mac&Cheese, PB&J, bologna...that sort of fare - My sister-in-law also is very limited on her menu - and if it's not McDonalds I really have a hard time getting them to go out to eat - very strange, I really can't explain.
Anyway...they have gone to the charactor breakfast with me before - that is one meal that is easier - but I was looking to go to a dinner. The small table or other DCer's idea sound like the route to go. I'll ask about other DCer's when it gets closer.
Thank you again for the suggestions.

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

IMO, Ohanas is about the closest thing to junk food as there is at a sit-down dinner at Disney.

The Lazy Susan is very similar to a pu-pu platter at a Chinese restaurant. The only thing that's even remotely spicy is the shrimp and one of the sauces. Everything else is very mild.

I'm biting my tongue as I say this, because it's not my place to make any suggestions for how someone should raise their kid, but I think you've got a perfect opportunity here to at least have DS begin to expend his culinary horizons. With a limited diet like the one you're suggesting, your son's arteries will be completely blocked by the time he's 50.

Limited spices and vegetables are key in maintaining a healthy diet.

Take it for what it's worth and please accept my apologies if I've overstepped.

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

Remember, too, that 'Ohana has a kids' menu! I'm absolutely sure that they've got some hot dogs, PB&J, and mac and cheese in their kitchens -- all disney restaurants do! In fact, I'm positive that they have mac and cheese as a child was eating it when I was there last week. An adult portion for your DH will cost only a bit extra. Disney is in the business of pleasing people, and I'm sure they wouldn't want you to have to leave your family just to try one of their restaurants. Call 'Ohana and see if it's possible to have hot dogs and mac and cheese on hand for your family (I'm POSITIVE they'll be able to do this), and go together. Your kids will love the fun games at the restaurant, and you and your husband will enjoy the atmosphere. Nobody should miss this restaurant, and you surely shouldn't have to go alone just because of their food preferances. Disney will cater to you -- all you have to do is ask. :)

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

Bali, you are absolutely right! What a sensible solution. I had a daughter who once went through a "mac and cheese" phase (thank goodness she outgrew that!) and we had no problem getting her a "fix" anywhere in WDW. O'hana's is such a "family" place, it would be a shame to go alone. If your husband's still reluctant, take the kids. They'll love it.

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

My DS is a VERY picky eater and we had a choice of many kid friendly options at 'Ohana. He is not a meat eater so we usually get him a plate of crispy fries when we dine out. 'Ohana was more than happy to please his picky tastes. My MIL is also picky and she does not like spice at all, however, she seemed to enjoy 'Ohana (all but the shrimp, that is).

Yes, have your DH and DS order off the kids menu (it is non-published....just ask!!)...then everyone can experience O'hana together and your son will love the hula hoop contests and the coconut race!!

I agree!!! Call ahead, in fact, call NOW!!! LOL
Iam sure Disney will go out of their way to accomodate your family, just explain how much you want to go there to eat dinner and if they know wayyy ahead of time, it will be easier for them to whip up something your DH and DS like!!
I have PS"s for Oct 30th, for dinner, My daughter is picky too, Iam sure she will be happy with some chicken and if she doesn't eat well, I will get her something else after we leave. But you know what, Iam sure she will be so happy there, being our arrival date, she won't even care what is served to her!!!

Yes Matt, I fully agree, limiting my veggie intake is key to my health. Veggies are gross! Give me beer and wings! (how the heck do I stay 110 lbs???)

Re: 'Ohana- Can I go alone?

If you want to go and they don't I agree with the others... find a DC friend that would like to go... I know there are times when my DH will not go somewhere with me... that he does not think he will like... If you know of someone else that would like to go that will be there at the same time... but of course the best would be go with your child... before my DD passed away... we went to Disney by ourselves... and we would go to resturants too... without Dad and Brother..I could never get my DS to do that...ºoºJudy
