VIP at Bistro de Paris

After a day wining and noshing at the Food and Wine Festival, DW and I went to Bistro de Paris, our favorite French restaurant, for a late-night dinner Tuesday night after the Beach Boys concert at Epcot.

We were schmoozing with our friend Phillipe, the manager, when an entourage entered the restaurant and demanded his attention. We became engrossed in conversation, and weren't really watching what was happening. When he returned, he appologized, because he had to take care of a VIP and deal with the Secret Service.

Who was the VIP? None other than Teresa Kerry, the wife of the presidential candidate. She was seated at a table in the back corner of the restaurant along with three well-dressed women. Three Secret Service guys with earpieces and wires disappearing down their collars, were at a table behind us, and a group of campaign people were at a table between Ms. Kerry and the regular folks.

But the most impressive of the bunch was the guy at the top of the circular staircase that leads to the dining room -- big, bald, no neck and with the stereotypical Fed stance designed to scare all. We gave the guy a fit as we ate late and were the last to leave -- beside Ms. Kerry. We lingered talking to our manager friend, and that Secret Service agent just kept bobbing and weaving and looking nervous as we said goodbye 50 times. Ms. Kerry stayed at her table till we were gone and then we could hear a Secret Service agent directing the party to exit out the back.

I think we were probably the only people in the restaurant other than Disney staff who knew that Ms. Kerry was there. Small world.

Do Americans nosh??

I once attended a function in London where Bill Gates was the guest speaker. You should have seen his entourage. We aren't generally used to armed bodyguards here in the UK and to be honest we were all very amused to watch their antics. To us, it was like something out of Hollywood as they posed and swaggered with their dark glasses, earpieces and barely concealed weapons. However, on reflection, the way the world is now, Bill Gates needs to have that sort of security, and so does all his family I would guess. I remember thinking at the time that even with all that money, I'd hate to have to live my life like that.

Was she having fun???
She probably could have let her hair down and walked around with the "regular" folk and not even been recognized.

She was deep in conversation with the people at her table throughout the meal and seemed to be totally unaware of her surroundings. She had been speaking to a women's group at a function on the other side of Orlando earlier in the evening, and her appearance at WDW apparently was strictly for enjoyment.

But yes, you're right. I'm sure she could have mingled and no one would have recognized her. And she does have considerable hair to let down.

OK Tom, I'm curious. What does "nosh" mean in the UK? Will this require a PM?

Unfortunate.

In fairness to my very good friend Mr Hopper, the term 'noshing' is used correctly by him to describe the act of snacking between meals. (Derived from the Yiddish word 'nash' and originating from the largely Jewish East End of London.) Its more vulgar derivation has come into use only latterly and has obviously not yet crossed the pond!

I also apologise unreservedly to Mr Hopper for my unintentional hi-jacking of his very interesting thread.
