Icon8 DTD Rainforest Cafe gripe...

So we're finally starting to finalize our plans with our friends that will be meeting us at Disney for a few days. They all live in FL (West Palm area) and are driving up to spend time with us. There is one night that we will all be together so we thought it would be fun to take the kids to Rainforest Cafe for dinner. There are 10 of us (including an infant and two toddlers). We called Rainforest today to make reservations and they told us they would have to reserve two tables for us and they couldn't say for sure that we would be seated together! I understand it may be a little more difficult and we are more than willing to wait a little longer if neccessary, but the whole point of us getting together is to actually visit with each other - not to scream "pass the ketchup!!" across the Amazon!! I thought this was the whole point of making reservations (I don't even think they call them PS at Rainforest). Any tips from anyone? Any other suggestions for a fun place to eat at DTD or somewhere else outside the parks? It has to be kid friendly! Thanks for listening to my gripe!

I think 'Ohana at the Poly is very kid friendly and I know for a fact that they will seat 10 people together. There are games for the kids and the food is always good.

Re: DTD Rainforest Cafe gripe...

That's actually a good idea. I've never been there, though - is it very kid friendly? Are there things to keep two toddlers amused through a lengthy dinner? I hadn't even given the resorts a thought - DTD seemed perfect since there is so much to do there to keep the kids entertained. What about the Boardwalk? Is it kid friendly? Any eateries that you guys would reccomend?

Re: DTD Rainforest Cafe gripe...

Honestly, you are going to WDW, almost every place is kid friendly. The Boardwalk is another good idea, there are a couple of nice restaurants there as well. 'Ohana has a couple of activities for the kids to participate in as well as a very relaxed atmosphere. There is a menu for the kids if they don't like the food offered, you just have to ask for it. You can always go to Downtown Disney after you finish dinner. I like to go out and watch the Electric Water Pagent from the beach at the Poly after a nice meal at 'Ohana.

At 'Ohanas they have games around the room just for the kids. I would recomend that. I would also suggest contacting the Rainforest Cafe at AK, it has an enterance inside the park and outside the park. Chef Mickey's is also wonderful.

Re: DTD Rainforest Cafe gripe...

Wow, what a crappy situation. That's ridiculous. It's obvious to me when a restaurant doesn't want your business that bad--they can't guarantee that you'll be seated together, even if you make reservations way in advance???

DisneyTeacher already stole my suggestion! 'Ohana is great for big groups, and it's fun for kids too...especially if they're willing to participate in the coconut races or hula hoop contests.

I also have been less-than-impressed with RF at DTD. My favorite DTD eatery is Planet Hollywood.
I ditto the suggestion for O'Hana. It's not only kid-friendly, it's grownup-friendly,too. Plenty of entertainment and games (I love watching the kids do the hoop race around the restaurant). And I alomost forgot - the food is fantastic and there's plenty of it.
Family friendly? Of course. After all, what does "O'Hana" mean????

Re: DTD Rainforest Cafe gripe...

I think the RF is definately over priced. Chef Mickey's is very nice. Sometimes a restaurant just cannot put everyone together. I know this last Thanksgiving we ate at Chef Mickey's, and had 4 individual tables. Of course there were 25 of us. With only 10, I'm sure you will all sit together.' Good luck!!! Chef Mickey's is a character dinner, and it is alot of fun!!!! JOANN

I have never understood the draw. It is overpriced, even outside of Disney, and the food isn't anything special. It is definitely not a "must do" kind of place.

Re: DTD Rainforest Cafe gripe...

I think the Rainforest Cafe is all about the atmosphere. The restaurant is unique and not your run of the mill TGI Friday's. We have been to 2 different RC and I thought the food was fine, not great but still good. It's not a must do for us but I have been to worse places and paid a lot more.

Re: DTD Rainforest Cafe gripe...

Wow- a pretty overwhelming response for O'hana's. I'm definitely going to suggest this to the others in our group. I've never even been to the Poly, so this might be a good chance to check it out. Does anyone know if they have a playground or something of that sort for the kids to play at before or after dinner?

I know there are playgrounds, around the Poly, but not sure where. They could also play on the beach.

Re: DTD Rainforest Cafe gripe...

I don't know if the Rainforest Cafe there is anything like the one near me, but my dd is scared to bits of the place. Every 15 minutes you loudly hear, see, and feel thunder, lightening, and large animals panicking. For a young one that might not be so fun...

Re: DTD Rainforest Cafe gripe...

I vote for Ohana's as well. We went there our very 1st nite in Disney.
And we had such a bad start to our vacation thanks to USAir , but
Ohana's put the smile back on all our faces!!! Even my DM enjoyed it!!!
The only down side was that I did not have time to locate my camera upon arrival, we literally raced from the airport to ck-in at the hotel to Ohana's for dinner!
I saw alot of large groups there and my DD even joined in the different activities there and afterwards we went outside to see Wishes from the beach and we were delighted when we saw the Electric water Pageant!! I had no idea about this!!! My DD delightfully played in the sand on the beach and had fun just doing that and watching the show!!! It was very magical from that time at Ohana's on... ohh.... also after dinner we had fun checking out the souvenir shops next door before we ventured outside.
I would definately go there!!!!
