are PS really needed in early dec.

When reading about people's plan for meals and the trip is not for 3 months, once you get there, do you ever wish you'd rather stay in MK and not have have PS in MGM? And since early Dec is suppose to be not crowded, would you feel safe not making PS all over the place? We are talking about 2 adults, so if we tried to get into a character meal but couldn't ,we wouldn't be crushed.

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

I always like to have my PS's all planned out, even in early Dec. It gives us a direction for the day. But there's nothing preventing you from skipping a PS if you find you're having a good time somewhere else. Just walk over to one of those phones and call Disney Dining and cancel. (You don't NEED to do this, it's just common courtesy to make room for someone else)

The only exception is a special meal you paid for in advance that required a 24 hr cancellation, but you probably wouldn't want to cancel something like that anyway.

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

I would make PS's all over the place simply because PS's are not binding. If you make PS where you think you will be--and then say you stay at MK longer than expected and you can't make your PS at MGM it's not a big deal to just 'not go'. However, we usually only make 2 or 3 so we don't feel bogged down. In early Dec. you'll still need them and want them at places such as 'Ohanas, Chef Mickey's...the bigger places. It's always nice to just walk up to a rest. and go right to your table.

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

I go every other year in early Dec. and I usually plan one or two PS's just so I have them. I know we always eat lunch the first day at Garden Grill, so I make that one. Last year we tried breakfast at Chef Mickey's so I made a PS for that since it is always busy. I would say that you are safe with waiting until you get there, as I have made PS's the day of...just call that morning before you leave your room.

For 2 adults I think you can completely wing it in early Dec. And even more so if you eat at non-peak times.

Before Dougie we would wing it and just plan it out once we were in that park. Sure sometimes we had lunch at 2:30 and then dinner at 8:00 but that was fine with us. Plenty of snacks that are must-haves so not like we would go hungry.

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

Last trip (2 yrs ago) we only had one PS, but of course we only ate three sit-down meals over the course of 10 days. Eating at off times is no problem, we tend to eat a good breakfast and that holds us for quite awhile. It is fun to plan, but I'm going crazy trying to decide between a 10 day myw with dining or an AP with the DDE card. We are planning to go for 13 or 14 nights, so we have lots of time to take breaks from the parks without feeling like we are missing something. I think if I had the dining plan I would feel like I would have to have PS's all over the place to take advantage of the plan. With DDE card, even with the savings, I know we wouldn't eat a sit-down every day, but more than 3 times in two weeks! It just sounds so much more relaxing to eat where you might be, than to have to run half way around Epcot to make a PS. Of course I also know we may not be able to get in some places. By the time we get to go, I'll need a vacation to recover from the planning!

I say wing it, except the busier spots.

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

Even though I always go in the off seasons, I still make a few PSes. If we change our minds on that day, we just cancel...no biggie. I hate waiting, so for the restaurants I really want to do, I always make a PS. I have successfully made PS once down there too, so you may be ok with that. Just book a few of your favorites.

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

There is no reason NOT to make a PS. So, you just cancel it. If you don't make them in the first place you may not get in but if you have them and don't use them you haven't lost anything. So, why not?

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

We usually go at that time of year. You will need PSs for Chef Mickeys and other character meals. Also for busier dining spots like Brown Derby, California Grill, Coral Reef etc. Like everyone else said, make them, but don't stress about later deciding to cancel if you wind up in a different park. Even though they say it's not supposed to be crowded, the non-PS lines are still 20+ minutes waits.

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

I don't want to waste my time at WDW waiting 30 minutes to an hour (longer in the summer when we go) to eat so we always make one PS per day. We have a rough plan of whrere we are going to be each day and I make a PS for that park or a nearby resort. Like others have said, PSs don't cost so if there are places you want to eat make a PS and if you change your mind when you get there call and cancel it.

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

You can call from your room the night before and make PS. I've even called in the afternoon for dinner PS.

I also was able to walk in to CRT and a few other places as much as an hour earlier than the PS I had originally made.

Re: are PS really needed in early dec.

When it was just DH and I, we would decide in the morning where we were going to have dinner and call for a PS.

When we took DS for his first time, I made a few PS' so we wouldn't have to wait. This time I may have over done it. We either have a PS for breakfast or dinner for almost everyday. I only made one PS a day, either breakfast or dinner. I went over everything with DH and he seemed ok with it, I'm just nervous it may be too much.
