Opinions on Kona Cafe

Hi Everyone!

We are going to WDW the first week in Decemeber and have made PS for dinner at the Kona Cafe on Decemeber 1. We are headed to the MVMCP that night and thought it would be a good idea to have dinner at a restaurant on the Monorail and then zip over to the MK. The only thing is my mom is having second thoughts about eating at the Poly. The first time we went to WDW, years ago (probably 16-17 years ago) we had dinner somewhere in the Poly though none of us can remember where and it was terrible! Of course, that was back when a lot of the food at WDW was terrible. I am just wondering if anyone had eaten dinner at the Kona Cafe and had an opinion on it - I always see a lot of breakfast reviews for it. Thanks everyone!

Karen

Well, yes, we eat breakfast here every time we are at WDW, and it is always wonderful. Kona Cafe is fairly new, so I don't think it was there that you ate before. I have heard from several people that the lunch and dinner there are good, but not spectacular.

I did find a review for you:

Kona Cafe Review

Hopefully someone else here has eaten either lunch or dinner here recently. It is on our list for December, though i don't think we will make it, except for breakfast that is.

I think it would be a great spot for you to stop for breakfast on the way to the parks but I don't know about lunch or dinner.

Ohanas is delicious and a must do!! However, if you are just planning on a quick stop on the way to the MVMCP then you may not have enough time to fully enjoy it! It's the kind of meal where you sit and enjoy the atmosphere and rest in between courses... wear your big pants cause you'll stuff yourself!! :p Kids have a great time there too. They have coconut rolling races (push with a broom), a hula hoop contest and hula lessons. My DD didn't care much for the food (she's almost 4) and there is no menu - just a set meal and not very little kid friendly. I know they are going for the total polynesian them but couldn't they serve a PB&J on Hawaiian bread or something? LOL! Even though she only ate a couple bites and made lots of yucky faces... she said it was one of her favorite meals at WDW!

I had dinner at Kona Cafe and I thought it was terrible. I was with three other people and we each got different dishes to share. All four entrees and appetizers were horrible. The only thing i would recommend is dessert. I agree with everybody's response with Ohana. The food is delicious there and it is alot of fun.

FYI, they do have a kids menu (mac & cheese, and the usual) but you have to ask for one. The kids menu meals are not all you can eat.

Right on with the big pants...in this place...elastic waistbands are a must!!!

We were told they didn't have a kids menu...I am outraged!!! I took one look at the menu and knew my very picky daughter would turn up her nose so I asked and was told they didn't have one but that kids usually love the food.

I would be outraged too! We have been 3 times (last trip was in June) and we have gotten kids meals each time. My son always gets mac and cheese and my daugher gets a hamburger. That is too bad that she didn't get to enjoy her meal there.

I KNOW my pickey kids wouldn't eat the food there, either. Sorry:(

Thanks for all your advice, everyone. I think we have decided to keep our PS for the Kona Cafe for now. I like to try different places everytime I got to WDW so it is worth a shot! Less than a month until our trip - I can hardly wait!

Hi

we stayed at the poly back in '99 and ate at the Kona and we did again the follwong year when we stayed at the Dolphin. We liked it very much. The service was great and it is a great location. save room for dessert!

I am back from WDW and had a great time. I just wanted to let everyone know that we did eat dinner at the Kona Cafe and it was delicious! I had the beef tenderloin with potatoes au gratin and fresh veggies. My dad had the beef teriyaki with sticky rice and mom had an asian noodle dish with shrimp. Everyone's meal was great! For dessert, Mom and I shared a chocolate torte (with liquid chocolate in the middle) and Dad had apple brown betty, I think. We shared a pressed pot of Kona Coffee. Everything was delicious and our server was nice. It was defintely not a quiet place, being smack in the lobby of the Polynesian but it was still great.
