castle cake

I spoke with the grand floridian bakery tonight about a cake for my dd's birthday and they suggested a 2-tiered castle cake made with either chocolate, white chocolate or cheesecake. Has anyone ever seen a cake like this?

Re: castle cake

Wow, I have never seen one like you described, but it sounds elaborate and beautiful! Did they tell you how much it would cost, out of curiosity?

Re: castle cake

Maybe the GF bakery can e-mail you a picture of it. I'm sure it would be just beautiful, probably like a mini wedding cake. I'm curious what the cost would be too.

Re: castle cake

Sounds like it would cost a fortune. But since the cake won't come out of a Betty Crocker box, it should be well worth it.
Oh the things we do....

I've seen pictures of the castle cake. Just stunning. But I'm sure you pay dearly for it...as in Wedding cake prices.

Re: castle cake

Why order one? Why don't you just make one?

Oh, never mind. I just re-read your post. You're going to be at the GH for his birthday... Taking a cake would be too much work for something like that. Yes, order one! It'll be a blast!

I've often thought about, if Carol and I were to ever get "remarried" (ie, redo our vows), I'd love to do it at WDW, just so we can have one of their wedding cakes with little silver Mickey heads imprinted all over it.

I can tell you how they make the castle cakes, if you're ever interested. It's not that hard. Most of it is in the fondunt. Just get that smooth, and you can do just about anything with it.

That's what my wife thinks, too. I'm the scrapbooker, the painter, the cake decorator, the interior designer, the poster maker, the drawer, the cross-stitcher, the....

If it involves art, I can do it. Most of it I taught myself or watched someone else do it. My mother thinks that's the reason why Carol married me--because I can do all the stuff that, normally, "a woman" does. Whatever.

My mother is a cake decorator, so I picked it up by watching her. The first cake I made was a birthday cake for Carol. Since then, I've made probably 150(? might be too low) birthday cakes, who knows how many grooms cakes, and two wedding cakes.

As for a castle cake, I made one last month. It ended up using five (yes, FIVE!) cake mixes, and was extremely tall and heavy. I didn't much care for it when it was done, because it was hot pink. That's what they wanted, so that's what they got. Hot pink with white trim, green ivy with yellow and purple flowers, and heart-shaped windows. UGLY. But, I did exactly what they wanted. THEY LOVED IT!

If it were left up to me, and I knew they wanted a pink castle, it would have ended up looking like Sleeping Beauty's castle.

And yes, I would have used rolled fondant. EASY stuff to use, once you learn how to get the wrinkles out.

Fondant: kind of a creamy sugar stuff that hardens slightly after it's set out for a few minutes. All the cakes you see on the covers of cake decorating magazines? You see how smooth they are? It's because they used fondant to cover them. Hides flaws. BIG TIME.

wow! you have a very lucky wife :) Fondant is SO cool! I've only used it once but I'd love to learn more about it. Maybe one day I'll take a cake making class.

Re: castle cake

It's fairly versatile, too. On Jordan's birthday cake last year, I made the top of the Empire State Building (EASY to do!). Anyway, I formed a Spider-Man and a Doctor Octopus out of Fondant, and had them fighting on top. Turned out pretty cool!

Re: castle cake

I pay a lady to make my cakes. I pay her ALOT of money to make me BEAUTIFUL cakes (that taste - omg, sooooososososossosososo good!! I don't know what she does to these cakes, but I suspect she puts some sort of addictive drug in them like cocaine, because OMG they are SOO Good)

Anyway - that's quite a lucrative business for her - have you ever thought of going into your own business, Jedi? Cakes, painting, specialized gifts, etc. ???
