MGM Dining--TS and CS favorties?

I think every thread I start has to do with food, lol. I need a little direction and some suggestions about MGM dining please

I realize SciFi gets very mixed reviews, but I was thinking my family would LOVE the novelty of the joint and I have gathered that sticking to burgers and shakes at lunchtime is the safest way to go (??). But now I am wondering if we should just go in for dessert, and eat somewhere else. This will be our first day at WDW after traveling from CA, so there is no way we will be up early enough for breakfast in the park, so I am planning on lunch and dinner here.

My DH would NOT like being force fed his greenbeans ( ) at 50's Prime Time, and the Brown Dreby, while I'm sure is wonderful, isn't what we're looking for, so these two aren't options for us.

What are your favorites, and what are your least favorites in this park?

Cheers

Re: MGM Dining--TS and CS favorties?

We've been to Sci Fi a couple of times and really enjoyed it. I knew going in that it wasn't a 5 star restaurant so we stuck to the basics. I had a pretty good reuben last time, not the best ever but still pretty good. Everyone in our group left full and said they enjoyed their meal. I think it's something so different that it's worth going to if you don't mind burgers.

Re: MGM Dining--TS and CS favorties?

If you don't want to do 50's Prime Time, Sci-Fi is a worthy alternative. :) I didn't like it because I wasn't able to really converse with my family while we were there, and because the B-movie reel kept repeating. There's only so many times I need to see the "Slime Thing From Mars" trailer while I eat.

Re: MGM Dining--TS and CS favorties?

How about burgers and shakes for lunch at SciFi and dinner at Hollywood and Vine. It is very yummy, and shares a hallway and restrooms with the 50's prime time, so you can peak in there and check the place out without having to keep your elbows off the table or stand in timeout!! hehehe!

We really enjoyed Mama Melrose's back in Dec. I have not tried anything else at MGM except for Pizza Planet.

Re: MGM Dining--TS and CS favorties?

I think we've been to all of the MGM restaurants now, since it's our family's favorite park.

• Prime Time: your enjoyment is very dependent on your server. If they're no fun, or tired, or whatever, then it's just food in a themed restaurant. We had a great server the first two times and couldn't wait to go back. Then we had one who bordered on mean and it turned us off.

• Sci-Fi: On the advice of several Disney friends, we went to the Sci-Fi just for a mid afternoon snack the firs time. We were enthralled with the place. It was so starkly different from anything else, we couldn't wait to go back there either. (But, my family begged me not to ever force them to eat so much in one day again, after adding a sit-down snack to our schedule) We've been back many times and this is a favorite of ours. We think the food is pretty good.

• H&V: we enjoy it. They're our restaurant of choice when we do the Fantasmic Dining Pkg. There's something for everyone there, and it's quick in and out, good meal.

• Mama Melrose: We had a good meal there the one time we went. Just never got around to going back seeing as there are so many other exciting places in MGM to go to.

• Brown Derby: I never booked this when we had the kids since I knew there was nothing on the menu that would appeal to them. Only went once and it was NOT a good experience. The waiter kept disappearing on us when we needed him and since we had trouble with our food and with the bill, we needed him many times.

• Pizza Planet: while the kids begged to go in there expecting it to be like the place in the movie, it wasn't. And the food was pretty blah. Standard theme park counter service-fare quality. We never went back.

I prefer to go to sit down meals when we can. I'm not a big fan of counter service places. (I guess I'm the picky one!) But there's plenty of both kinds to choose from at MGM.

And just like everything else, you have to try things that you're interested in for yourself. Our experiences and tastes vary widely.

Re: MGM Dining--TS and CS favorties?

I am pretty much in agreement with Ddoll. We love Sci- Fi and it is great for lunch. Now the food is just pretty good IMO, but the novelty of the place is great, and we had really good service when we were just there. Prime time is wonderful, with the right server. Ours was AMAZING !! I 'll be talking about him in my TR over the next couple of days.

Re: MGM Dining--TS and CS favorties?

Definately go to Sci Fi for the atmosphere. And the food isn't really all that bad.

I'm glad you're still trying to get a grip on it, because I am, too. It just doesn't seem like there are that many interesting place to eat there, although that's not really true!

Re: MGM Dining--TS and CS favorties?

I like Sci-Fi and 50's Prime Time, but you have to be willing to play along at 50's PT or it is no fun. For counter service my favorite is Backlot Express (I think that's the name) over just past Indiana Jones stunt show. It is kind of hidden and avoids alot of the crowds. Just your typical burgers and fries, but I have never waited in a line here. I also like Pizza Planet.
