Morals . . . or money . . .

OK. DS turns 10 a month before we go to WDW. I see that many of the menus have changed their kids menu age to 9! We will never lie in front of DS so if anyone asks, he'll be 10. (That sounds terrible! We aren't a "lying" kind of family even when DS isn't around!! ) Anyway, how "enforced" are the ages for kids menu items?

Hehehe. I was wondering what you could possibly be asking here. I wonder about that too. I wonder why they changed it.

Morals always. You will be asked how old your child is or they will ask your child how old they are. You would have to make them lie and that is just plain wrong. It's a bad example to set. The CM always ask my DD how old she is and not me. I woudlnt' feel right asking her to lie just to save me some money.

Maybe you can just go the route of sharing some food. There was always too much food for us so often we would just share. I must say 9 seems young to have to quit eating off the kids menus. I wonder why they changed it. At the counter service they won't care though. How many times have we all ordered Happy Meals for ourselves.

Go with morals! My son is 11 and he's looking very forward to NOT ordering on the kid's menu. It will make the vacation more special. With that said, split some meals! I think Disney had done this to capitalize on their new Dining Plan. The plan charges $38 per day per adult and only $10 for children. Low and behold, a 10 year old is suddenly an adult now!

Do they REALLY ask you hold old your child is? How do you say that? That seems kinda tacky to me.

Re: Morals . . . or money . . .

I know that they always ask the age of the children when you make your adrs. It is weird that a 10 year can not order off the kids menu. I know there are some 10 year olds who could eat you out of house and home, and others who barely eat at all. I wonder

Re: Morals . . . or money . . .

Hmm. Hopefully they won't ask his age. As I said in my original post, we would never lie about his age. And we would never ask him to lie about his age. He wouldn't lie anyway . . . he'll be too proud to be 10! That's not even the issue. The moral question for me is, do we place an order off of the kids menu and hope they don't ask, or before they ask and pretend we didn't pay any attention to the age thing? Or do we just order off of the regular menu because he's 10? That's why I was wondering how enforced it is . . . how often do they really ask? Right now he's very much a "kid menu" eater. Maybe he'll be different in December, but I doubt it. What if we offered to pay more for the kids menu meal?

Not very enforced. Every time I eat at Columbia Harbor House, I ALWAYS order the child's meal. I'm clearly not under 9, and no one ever bats an eye at me.

I have to agree here - I wouldn't lie or ask your child to lie either, but I don't see anything wrong with sharing. Portions at WDW are way too big anyway.

Re: Morals . . . or money . . .

I read TR's often where people have shared meals at TS restaurants and other TR's with adults ordering kids meals at CS with no problem. Maybe if you are questioned you can simply tell them an adult sized meal is too much food.

I personally think it's a bad idea to 'make' a person order a certain size meal based on their age. I understand the pricing for a buffet as one it's a sort of cover charge, but at a sitdown or CS type restaurant it's almost silly

Re: Morals . . . or money . . .

Disney's not so concerned about ordering off the menus as they are with customer satisfaction.

Re: Morals . . . or money . . .

Sharing is definitely an option . . . if DH or I are eating macaroni and cheese. He'll be willing to share food with us once or twice but our tastes and his tastes are very different. We like to try a lot of unique foods or something we've never tried before. DS isn't always so brave. Sometimes he surprises us, but not very often. I haven't seen any age cut-off for the buffets so I'm not sure if he would be considered a child or adult. We would have a hard time justifing the adult price for him for a buffet.

Good point. I think we'll just cross each bridge as we get to it. I'm certainly not going to lose sleep over it and we'll pay whatever we have to pay without making it an issue. It's just always nice to save a buck. Or two.
Thanks, everyone, for all of your input!

Re: Morals . . . or money . . .

I would not think they would have a problem with ordering from a kids menu, regardless of age, if you are paying for it (i.e. not on the dining plan---and even then it seems it would SAVE the restaurant money).

I can see where it would be a problem at a buffet, but not at table service or counter service.

It would be a problem for kids on the dining plan the OTHER way around, i.e. a child wants to eat an adult meal. That would not work ....
