California Grill...with kids?

DH REALLY wants to try this place when we go in August. I know it's two TS credits, but he really wants to try it. Question...is it acceptable to bring the kids there? They will be 5 and 2 at the time. Also, is there a dress code or can we roll in there wearing shorts that we have been wearing all day at the parks?

Any and all opinions welcome! THANKS!!!!

Re: California Grill...with kids?

My DH & I took the kids there in May and they were 6 and 8 at the time. We all LOVED IT!!! I would highly recommend it, the food was awesome and well worth the 2 TS credits. We have pictures of both kids dangling spoons from their noses (we don't get out much). The people near us were laughing hysterically (their son was also the chef and they called him over to see it!) We did take Gameboys just in case, but didn't need them-they had coloring mats and things for them to do and we all helped them. As for what to wear, there is a business casual dress code. We wore nice shorts and button down shirts. There were people there in really nice clothes too but I wasn't into all that. You can take the kids out on both balconies and take pictures of MK. And make sure your reservations are late enough to include Wishes!!! Wonderful view of MK!

Re: California Grill...with kids?

You can definitely go with kids. Although it's a more "up-scale" restaurant, there are lots of kids there and it's actually quite loud. For those looking for the fine-dining experience this is a negative; for those of us with youngsters, it's a plus.

They do recommend a certain dress-code (I forget what words they use, "resort casual" or something like that). And I know there are other posts on the dress code at CG on the boards here. But basically, I think that as long as you're presentable, and not in something like cut-offs or sleeveless T-shirts, you probably won't have a problem.

If you have the dining plan (and I guess you do), make sure to order the appetizers and desserts that the kids would get even if they aren't going to eat them-then you can have a taste of different things. We had 4 plates of sushi going on at our table (the CM told us to order them for the kids because we were getting charged for it anyway!) If you're into sushi they have the #2 female sushi chef in the world (or US-can't remember!). I'm not a big fan of it but it was incredible-definitely the place to eat sushi if you never have before! And the desserts were to die for-my 8 yr old had "Rice Krispie Sushi"-little RK treats colored and cut to look like sushi. I had a plantain & ice cream dessert w/ homemade ice cream and a sauce-I almost licked the plate !

I am so confused with the dining plan for kids - does the kids menu have sushi for the kids to order for appetizers? Or, do they get to pick from the adult appetizer menu? And, is all of the sushi on the menu considered an appetizer? So many ??'s- sorry! We LOVE sushi (and work at a Japanese restaurant) & we need a 2 TS dinner, so maybe this could be it!

The kids menu didn't have appetizers, they had us pick 2 off the menu. When we asked about the sushi they said yes. I think the rule was anything under $24 or something like that. I don't remember if there was any sushi on the regular menu or not but the plates we got for appetizers were big. I'm sure their menu is posted somewhere. My husband LOVES it too-me not so much, but I was willing to try it and actually liked it a lot. Now that we're home I won't eat it-too far from an ocean!

Re: California Grill...with kids?

I would say definately you can take your kids. Mine didn't go with us but that was only because it was our anniversary and my parents were also on vacation with us. There were quite a few kids there and they all seemed to be having a good time. There were people all dressed up and people who came in more casual clothes (like us). It was an excellent meal and our server was wonderful. Make sure you get late reservations so you can watch the fire works.

Re: California Grill...with kids?

I would absolutely take the children. It's very child-friendly, not to mention an awesome spot for them to see the fireworks.

Re: California Grill...with kids?

I HATE sushi...but DH LIVES for it. Yes, we are on the Dining Plan and not paying for it, so this is the perfect opportunity to go.

I am leaning towards making the ADR here.

Any more opinions?

Re: California Grill...with kids?

My two boys first time there was when they were 12 and 6 so a little older but they loved it. When we were there in Nov 2006 they had a paper table cloth and crayons so the kids could color all over the table.

Here is some Dress Code info from:

Disney World, Walt Disney World Information Guide - INTERCOT - Walt Disney World Inside & Out - Info Central

While the in-park restaurants have no dress codes, a number of the finer restaurants at the Walt Disney Resort hotels do. Disney’s “Signature” restaurants at their on-property resort hotels all have either a Business Casual or Formal Dress Code. See the chart below for a list of the specific restaurants with requirements on attire.

The guidelines for each dress code are as follows:

Business Casual Dress Code

Attire considered appropriate by this dress code is:
• Dress shorts
• Dress pants
• Jean pants
• Collared shirts
• Blouses
• Sweaters

Attire Not permitted by this dress code is:
• Hats
• Swimsuits
• Swimsuit cover-up's
• Tank tops
• T-shirts
• Torn clothing
• Flip-flops

Formal Dress Code

Attire required by this dress code is:
• Jacket and Dress Wear (for men)
• Evening Dress Wear (for women)

Attire considered optional by this dress code is:
• Tie (for men)
