South African Wines
I'm planning on dining in-room one night, but would like to bring our own South African wines to save money. I know *nothing* about them and would love some input. Our local store has the following:
Agusta Angel's Tears David Frost Sauvignon Blanc (Arnold Palmer) David Frost Chardonnay (Arnold Palmer) David Frost Merlot (Sam Sneed) C Back Pinotage Fairview Coastal Goats do Roam (go figure! supposed to be very unusual, sweet and fruity) Cape Indaba's - Chadonnay, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc Guardian Peak Cabernet/Syrah KWV's Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Shiraz, and Sauvignon Blanc Porcupine Ridge Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc Zonnebloem Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc I know it's kind of an intimidating list. I prefer to drink Merlot when just sipping, but will probably choose something light for dinner. DH is a beef fan and goes for whites. Go figure. Any help is appreciated. I'm so paranoid I'm going to select a fluffy wine for a dinner.

MickeyMac : I would contact the AKL & ask them about the wines. I am sure they would be more than helpful.
We stayed @ AKL in Oct. & had some SA wines, but I couldn't tell you a thing about them. One thing about wine, go w/what you like. the syrahs, cabs & pinotages are strong reds. Stay w/a white, since DH likes that & you like Marloets (which are mild reds). Unless you want to be daring. Try the Pinotage, they are excellent & rare. |

MickeyMac,
This probably isn't any help, but I thought it was a bit strange. My wife and I lean strongly towards Reislings and Gerwurztraminers; white, at least semi-sweet, and not very dry. I don't know ANYTHING about South African wines in general, but I heard that AKL had a great selection. After we described our tastes, our server basically told us that they didn't really have any wines like that. She brought out one that she thought we might like (I can't remember the name or even the type), but we ended up not liking it very much. Your tastes appear to be very different than ours though, so I think you'll have better luck. We've never had any problems immediately finding a wine that we liked (with or without server help) in any other WDW restaurant. Bruce

Thanks - I never thought to call the resort. I hope they don't mind my asking about them (or, maybe I shouldn't mention I'm bringing them?) :D
Bruce, we very much like reislings, too. We're not big wine drinkers at all, but do like to experiment with new tastes. The only feedback I seem to consistantly get from people who've been there is that they didn't much care for the whites.

If in doubt always go w/what you like.
I'm a big reds drinker. The more "full-bodied" redder I like it. I don't really like whites, they are too light for me. Stay away from strong reds if you are not a big drinker of wines. |

Hi Mickeymac!
You like Merlot which is actually a fruity wine but dryer depending on the area. Your husband likes whites which tend to be dry. I agree that you should stick to something you like, but want to try something new. I think Pinotage may be too strong. My favorite wine is Fume blanc, but only by Mondavi. I once tried a different "brand" and did not care for it at all. It tasted like a different wine. I noticed Porcupine ridge has both Merlot and Sav. blanc. Could you bring a bottle of both?

I think we've tried that Fume blanc (have to check my corks LOL!)
Yes, I can bring a bottle of both. I kind of like the idea of Goats Do Roam, too (probably because of the name! LOL!) the Pinotage is the other one on my 'bring' list (I think I'm going to end up with four bottles, just in case??) but you're saying it's too strong? How so? I've heard it described as "agressive." Oh, and THANK you all!! I'm learning a ton from this.
