Whispering Canyon Cafe

We visted the Whispering Canyon Cafe in October 07 and had a very nice time. The kids enjoyed it as well as DH and I. It was our first visit and we would love to go back. The food was great and the atmosphere was very good. They did the katchup thing and the kids rode the wooden horses around the room.
My Mom who was with us wanted us to visit here and talked about how exciting it was. They tide people up in their chairs, made a big deal out of my Aunts purse b/c she made it out of jeans, showing everyone in the room, made big deals over people in the room, and made hats for people out of their bandannas.
Now when we went they didn't do anything like these things. So Mom is a little disappointed with them and doesn't want to revisit due to this as well as us trying new places to eat.
What's going on? Why have they "downed" the atmosphere? Was it just the night we went or the way they do things now?
Dad is coming along this year as well and has never been so I thought it would be a good idea but ith Mom being disappointed we don't know what to do.
Any suggestions or info you have about this?

Gotta say from our experience it is hit or miss with WCC. Sometimes they are very interactive, and others, not so much.

Try a new place! We like Ohanas it similar To WC in family style dinning, entertainment for the kids(congo line, coconut races, limbo)and the food is good.I also remember WC doing so many different antics the first time and not as many the second or thrid.but still a must on every trip!

Re: Whispering Canyon Cafe

You could revisit WCC, just do things on purpose to get the party started. For example, wear a Universal shirt, make sure to ask for refills and ketchup. If the server isn't in the mood, make the mood yourself!

Re: Whispering Canyon Cafe

Well, we are totally making it to Ohanas!
I do have WCC on our list but Moms saying she will have to see if there is another place she'd rather eat after cheking out the dining info on allears.net. She was so disappointed with WCC this last visit with us. I told her if she found another place, she's thinking California Grill, she'd go there while we went to WCC.
I told her I'd see what our fellow Disney lovers thought to help with the final decision.

IF you are looking for some interaction from your "cousins" (servers)... 50's PrimeTime is a good one. The food is "just like mom used to make"... and at 50's PT.. she is back there in the kitchen making it.

Re: Whispering Canyon Cafe

I think alot of the interaction is dependent on the guests. I went to 50s Prime Time last year by myself. There were CM who really got into it with their cousins but some didn't. I think they initially feel out the guest and based on their cues they decide what to do. For me when she plopped down the utensils I automatically set the table. It's what I used to do with my grams. Little did I know that was one of the things they usually interact over (if you want the interaction DON'T set your table).

I'd say try WCC again and try the suggested interaction starters. Allears has a list of what people in the past have done who have gotten a response.

I have to agree. We are not ones looking for action, so are happy when it its toned down for us. But last dec, we saw a boy "put in jail", someone was on the phone and the server yelled "everybody quiet, he's trying to call in sick", another server was humming (very loudly) the theme to jepardy (sp?) as she waited for an order. I'm sure there was some other things, just can't remember.

I'm totally going to check this out. We'll have to try whatever the suggestions are and maybe that will make Mom more happy and willing to try it again.
jo-jo Maybe I can get my son put in jail too! We'd all like to see that! He's our little comedian!
DD will be almost 3 and our last visit she was only 19 months so we'll see what we can do with her to get some attention!

Same with us, it depends on your server and the other servers working that night.

Re: Whispering Canyon Cafe

I think the experience you have in these interactive restaurants is completely variable. It depends on your server, your mood, the other guests who are you in the restaurant, time of day, where you are seated...lots of different things. Yes, it's disappointing when you've heard about all kinds of fun things other people have been part of, but really, if it were the same experience for every one every time, then it wouldn't be as much fun!

So, go with the idea that you will be silly and start playing with your server. They can tell when you're in for some mischief.

Re: Whispering Canyon Cafe

I think you should try it again. Be interactive and try to get your mom "in trouble" that way they will interact with her and give her that special attention.

Re: Whispering Canyon Cafe

At many of these type of"interactive" restaurants, I've found that the mileage varies depending on the night and the staff working that particular evening. If you like the menu, then go with an open mind.

Re: Whispering Canyon Cafe

So does anyone have any ideas of how we can get them going?
Other than the ones at allears.net, anything that you've done and have stories to tell?
Is getting put into jail getting tied to your seat? Any ideas how I can have DS tied to his seat?
The kids will love a bunch of things to try out.

Re: Whispering Canyon Cafe

In all the reposts I've read I've never heard of people getting tied to their seat.
