Mara at AKL

We decided to try this CS place on our trip in October because my friends wanted to see AKL and we needed a place to go for lunch on the first day. I don't recall hearing any reviews though. Anyone have anything to say about it?

Re: Mara at AKL

I don't go out of my way for any CS, with the possible exception of Sunshine Seasons, so the thought of running down to AKL just for Mara doesn't make sense. We did grab lunch there when we were staying there in 2006. I think I got the shrimp platter and zebra domes. The shrimp wasn't much more than the standard Sysco Food Service shrimp, nothing to write home about. I guess if you like flatbreads, you could find luck there.
I'll repeat for those that didn't catch it the first time, Zebra Domes to go and lots of them. And Paw Print Brownies too.
What I'm trying to say is Mara wasn't really anything out of the ordinary, but if you're already at AKL and it's lunch time and you're hungry, it's fine. Mara is your only choice for lunch anyway. Boma doesn't do lunch and Jiko is only open for dinner.

Re: Mara at AKL

Yep, typical resort counter service. Chicken fingers and the like. But it IS cool that you can get some of those AKL yummies to go. I know that the last time I was there they had individual portions of the sundried tomato hummus (which everyone raves about at Boma) and things like that (in addition to the zebra domes), which you can't find at other counter service places. So you guys should be able to find some interesting things to try.

Re: Mara at AKL

Mara has the standard type food, but also has a wonderful African stew that my kids love. The surroundings is the plus in going to this CS. Grab your food and step outside to the outdoor eating area. It's very relaxing.

(*cough*ZEBRA DOMES*cough*) Its your run of the mill CS, but it will give you a great chance to have a wander around the resort!

Re: Mara at AKL

If your friends want to see the resort and you're hungry it's a great place to go! The food is normal counter service you'd get anywhere else but they do have great desserts pre-packaged like Zebra Domes and chocolate truffles. The atmosphere there is pretty nice as well.

Re: Mara at AKL

I am so glad you asked this question, I was wondering how Mara was myself but we are strying at the lodge so it wouldn't be a special trip. I know if I were staying at another resort I would love to see AKL, so having lunch or dinner there would be on my list.

Re: Mara at AKL

Having stayed at the AKL twice, I have been to the Mara plenty of times. their breakfast wraps are AWESOME. Their lunch is typical counter service, but I think they have a few different items (chicken and rice) that most counters don't have. It's a decent lunch...nothing to write home about, but totally fine.

ddoll, we really liked the offerings at the Mara. I agree with Dana, the breakfast wraps were very good, as were the wraps for lunch.

Re: Mara at AKL

We just stayed at AKL and had a turkey ciabatta sandwich at the Mara that was excellent. It had a sundried tomato spread and lots of chopped kalamata olives on it. Yummy! We ate there 2x and enjoyed it both times.

If your booking at evening meal at the Boma they put a ton of them out on the far left in the desert corner, you can indulge all night long lol! Though after just a few they can get quite sickly!

If you can work dinner at Boma into your plans, that's good. On the other hand, they keep the coolers in Mara stocked with Domes, and you don't have to pay for the whole meal. It's like the Tonga Toast of AKL and Mara is Capt. Cook to Boma's 'Ohana.

Re: Mara at AKL

Well our dilemma is this: we need to find a quick place for a late lunch. We don't want to go into the parks to eat. We're saving the park day and just going into MK after 4pm for the MNSSHP. We just sacrificed a dinner at Boma to get one at 'Ohana. If we stop at AKL, it will be both on the way to our villa, and provide us a stop where we can still get a little native taste of food.
